HDMI 2.1a Specifications Updated to Include Cable Power Option

HDMI 2.1a, Amendment 1 adds a new feature: HDMI Cable Power. With this feature, active HDMI Cables can now be powered directly from the HDMI Connector, without attaching a separate power cable. This makes attaching and using active HDMI Cables as easy as using passive, wired HDMI Cables. To use the HDMI Cable Power feature, it is necessary to have an HDMI Cable which supports the HDMI Cable Power feature, and also an HDMI Source device which supports the HDMI Cable Power feature. This combination ensures that the active HDMI Cable can safely draw sufficient current from the HDMI Connector to power its internal circuitry.

In the case of the Ultra High Speed HDMI Cable, performance requirements are so high, it is likely that the only way to meet the Ultra High Speed HDMI requirements in cables longer than a few meters is through powered, active HDMI Cables. Therefore, HDMI Cable Power was added to help support the HDMI 2.1a specification's higher speeds by providing power to those active cables which may need it to function correctly. While active HDMI Cables have previously been used extensively in professional markets, their use will now increase in the home whenever consumers need longer-length Ultra High Speed HDMI Cables.

Russia to Use Chinese Zhaoxin x86 Processors Amidst Restrictions to Replace Intel and AMD Designs

Many companies, including Intel and AMD, have stopped product shipments to Russia amidst the war in Ukraine in the past few months. This has left the Russian state without any new processors from the two prominent x86 designers, thus slowing down the country's technological progress. To overcome this issue, it seems like the solution is embedded in the Chinese Zhaoxin x86 CPUs. According to the latest report from Habr, a motherboard designer called Dannie is embedding Chinese Zhaoxin x86 CPUs into motherboards to provide the motherland with an x86-capable processor. More precisely, the company had designed a BX-Z60A micro-ATX motherboard that embeds Zhaoxin's KaiXian KX-6640MA SoC with eight cores based on LuJiaZui microarchitecture. The SoC is clocked at a frequency range of 2.1-2.7 GHz, carries 4 MB of L2 cache, 16 lanes of PCIe 3.0, and has integrated graphics, all in a 25 Watt TDP.

As far as the motherboard is concerned, it supports two DDR4 memory slots, two PCIe x16 connectors, M.2-2280 and M.2-2230 slots, and three SATA III connectors for storage. For I/O you have USB ports, DisplayPort, HDMI, VGA/D-Sub, GbE, 3.5-mm audio, and additional PS/2 ports. This is a pretty decent selection; however, we don't know the pricing structure. A motherboard with KaiXian KX-6640MA SoC like this is certainly not cheap, so we are left to wonder if this will help Russian users deal with the newly imposed restriction on importing US tech.

Blackmagic Design Announces New Blackmagic Cloud Store Mini

Plus with Dropbox sync, multiple units can be synchronized across different geographic locations. Blackmagic Cloud Store Mini is available immediately from Blackmagic Design resellers worldwide for US$2,995. Blackmagic Cloud Store Mini is the perfect network storage solution for any use. It's great for film and television where large media files need to be shared between multiple users for editing, color correction, audio post and VFX work. It even handles massive 12K Blackmagic RAW digital cinema files. Each user gets zero latency and they don't need to store files on their local computer. It's the perfect solution for DaVinci Resolve.

Blackmagic Cloud Store Mini features a compact rack mount design that's very portable and whisper quiet. Internally it has an array of 4 flash memory cards working in parallel for higher speed. The 10G Ethernet port and the 1G Ethernet port operate as a 2 port network switch. There is also an HDMI monitoring output so customers can watch a live graphic view of the storage operating on a TV or monitor. The Blackmagic Cloud Store Mini is available with 8 TB of flash memory, so customers have lots of space for their files. That's fantastic for television production, as it's small enough to be portable, but it has enough storage space for lots of video media. M.2 flash memory cards are used for extreme reliability, high access speeds and zero seek times. Plus the four M.2 cards are arranged in a parallel RAID 0 group so they can operate much faster than a single card. That ensures enough speed to keep up with the 10G Ethernet connection.

Dell Brings Back the UltraSharp 30, Updated With Modern Connectivity

One of Dell's most popular LCD monitors was the Dell UltraSharp 30 and the company has now brought it back, but the new U3023E model is quite different from its predecessors. It's still a 16:10 monitor with 2560x1600 resolution, but the overall design has been refreshed and it now features slimmer bezels and a slimmer overall build, a slightly re-designed stand and a lighter colour palette. However, the real changes have taken place under the hood, as this is one of the most fully featured displays ever made when it comes to connectivity. Display inputs consist of an HDMI 1.4 port, a DisplayPort 1.4 and a USB-C port with DP 1.4 Alt Mode as well as USB PD at 90 Watts.

There's also a DP out for daisy chaining to a second display, a USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 (10 Gbps) upstreams port and a USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 downstreams port with 15 W power delivery. Furthermore there are four USB-A 3.2 Gen 2 ports, of which one supports the Battery Charging 1.2 standard. Finally there's an RJ45 port for Ethernet connectivity when used with a laptop or similar and a 3.5 mm audio output jack. The panel is of IPS type and has a rated brightness of 400 cd/m² and a contrast ratio of 1000:1, as well as a 100 percent sRGB and 95 percent DCI-P3 colour gamut. As this is an office display, the refresh rate is still stuck at 60 Hz and the response time is 8 ms, or 5 ms in fast mode. For those nostalgic enough to splash out on the new UltraSharp 30, you're looking at a fairly steep US$784.99.

Many HDMI and Coaxial Antenna Cables in the Market Don't Meet EU EMC Regulations

The German Federal Network Agency, together with Agentschap Telecom Netherlands, BAKOM Switzerland and Elsäkerhetsverket Sweden have tested consumer HDMI and coaxial antenna cables and come to the conclusion that many of them don't meet regulations when it comes to Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC). The four groups tested 30 coaxial antenna cables and 30 HDMI cables, of which only 11 percent of the antenna cables met the manufacturers declared attenuation and and only 10 percent of the HDMI cables met an acceptable EMC quality of at least 50 dB coupling attenuation.

Usually EMI, or electromagnetic interference is what's being discussed, but EMC is about how a device works and interacts in an environment so it doesn't cause EMI. In terms of cables, the normal cause for EMI tends to be because the cable ends up working like an antenna and starts to simplify the signal being transmitted inside the cable. This can cause all sorts of problems, with the most obvious example being poorly shielded USB 3.0 cables, which can interfere with 2.4 GHz radios, such as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, wireless mice and headphones etc.

Redesigned Apple MacBook Pro Coming This Summer with up to 64 GB of RAM and 10-Core Processor

According to Bloomberg, which first predicted the arrival of Apple custom processors in MacBooks, we have another piece of information regarding Apple's upcoming MacBook Pro lineup, set to arrive this summer. As you are aware, MacBook Pro right now comes in two different variants. The first is a smaller 13-inch design that is powered by Apple's M1 chip, while the second is a 16-inch design powered by an Intel Core processor. However, it seems like that will no longer be the case when the next-generation lineup arrives. Starting this summer, all of the MacBook Pro models will have Apple's custom silicon powering these devices, which bring Intel's presence to an end.

And the successor to the now-famous M1 chip seems to be very good. As per the report, Apple is upgrading the architecture and the total core count. There are two different chips, codenamed Jade C-Chop and Jade C-Die. Both are 10-core designs, equipped with two small and eight big cores. The difference between the two is the total number of graphics cores enabled. The smaller version will have 16 graphics cores, while the bigger one will have 32 graphics cores. On the SoC, there will be an updated Neural Engine, for better AI processing. These new processors will come with up to 64 GB of RAM in selected configurations as well.
