Desktop PC monitor manufacturers may have their heads collectively stuck up their in sand, but smartphone, tablet, and notebook display panel makers don't, and that's only working to bring the fabled post-PC era upon us quicker. x86 heavyweight Intel Corp. has just updated its desktop processor offer with a bunch of new Haswell and Ivy Bridge models. Detailed below, this latest release wave includes the 3.5 GHz Core i7-4771, four Core i5 chips priced at $182 (two Haswell and two Ivy Bridge CPUs), Core i3s going from 2.9 GHz to 3.6 GHz, five Pentiums, plus a couple of Ivy Bridge-based Celerons. The processors cover a price range that starts at $42 (for the low-power Celeron G1620T) and tops $314 (for the Core i7-4771).

Intel's 9-series chipset, which is built for the company's next-generation Core "Broadwell" processor family, and slated for the second half of 2014, may face backwards-compatibility issues with current-generation Core "Haswell" processors, and the ability of current 8-series platforms to support "Broadwell," even though the two processor families share a common LGA1150 CPU socket, according to a VR-Zone report.

The report notes that a number of electrical connections between the CPU socket and chipset are different, and the chip follows a different power supply (as in power distribution within the chip/motherboard) than "Haswell." Such differences could pose backwards-compatibility issues. Although a generation ahead of Haswell, Broadwell isn't its immediate successor. Intel plans to roll out a refreshed Core "Haswell" processor family in a few quarters from now, which in addition to fully-integrated clocking mode, could introduce a few other platform changes. The report notes that 9-series chipset motherboards could be more compatible with Haswell (refresh), than the current Haswell platform. Intel 9-series chipset could introduce support for SATA-Express, the next big consumer internal storage interface that succeeds SATA 6 Gb/s.

MSI, world-renowned manufacturer of gaming hardware is officially introducing a new 27-inch, All-in-One Gaming PC: AG2712A. The MSI AG2712A features the Intel Core i7 3630QM quad-core processor, AMD's top-of-the-line Radeon HD 8970M discrete graphics card, and up to 2GB GDDR5 of graphics memory for the best gaming experience. The AG2712A comes with a brand new designed bezel, emphasized by its red lines which correspond with the colors of MSI's Gaming product lines. Furthermore, the AG2712A is equipped with Military Class 4 components and a Flicker-free anti-glare display. In cooperation with Plextor, MSI developed and integrated two SSD drives optimized for the AG2712A, which work in RAID 0 configuration. The AG2712A will become generally available in Europe by end of August of this year.

The business end of Intel's 4th generation Core desktop processor family, Core i3 and Pentium Dual-Core, are dressing up for work. Intel reportedly gave final touches to retail pricing of at least three new Core i3 parts, a mid-range Core i5 part, a high-end Core i7 part, and three Pentium ones. Intel's Core i3 "Haswell" desktop processor lineup begins with the Core i3-4130 dual-core processor, featuring 3.40 GHz clock speed, no Turbo Boost, HyperThreading, and 3 MB of shared L3 cache, priced at US $136.85. It is followed by the Core i3-4330, which ups clock speed to 3.50 GHz, shared L3 cache to 4 MB; and a $154.75 price-tag. The Core i3 "Haswell" family is led by the Core i3-4340, with its 3.60 GHz clock speed, and 4 MB of L3 cache.

Intel also plans a mid-range quad-core Core i5 part, the i5-4440, which features 3.10 GHz clocks, 3.40 GHz Turbo Boost, no HyperThreading, and 6 MB of shared L3 cache. It is priced at $197.26. Intel also rectified its high-end Core i7 lineup with the new Core i7-4771, which features 3.50 GHz clocks, 3.90 GHz Turbo Boost, HyperThreading, and 8 MB of shared L3 cache. This part, as reported earlier, is designed to displace the Core i7-4770 (non-K), and is priced at $333.77 a piece.

HWBot.org blanket-banning benchmark submissions from Windows 8 machines sent ripples across the PC enthusiast community. Overclocker Christian Ney from OCaholic.ch spent some time trying out different combinations of hardware and operating system to check if Windows 8 RTC (realtime-clock) bug affects benchmarks consistently, on all hardware platforms. His findings are interesting, and one can draw the inference that only Intel processor-based machines could be affected by the bug, not AMD-based ones.

Ney observed the Windows 8 RTC bug to affect benchmark results only on Windows 8 machines running Intel LGA1150 "Haswell," LGA1155 "Ivy Bridge," and LGA1155 "Sandy Bridge," and not AMD AM3 and FM2 platforms. The issue didn't surface on any system running the older Windows 7 operating system. With it, it's clear that it's not just Microsoft that has to do some troubleshooting, Intel has to, as well. HWBot.org may have just saved itself time and pointless "bias" debates by blanket-banning Windows 8.

Gaming PC specialist CyberPowerPC launched its first entry-level notebook that leverages Intel's Iris Pro 5200 integrated graphics, the Zeus Hercules. Tucking in an Intel Core i7-4750HQ processor, which is a variant of the Intel Core "Haswell" processor with a larger integrated GPU featuring 40 execution units, and L4 eDRAM cache, the notebook features a 14-inch full-HD (1920 x 1080 pixels) screen. The notebook is also one of the first to integrate Intel's Hyperbaric cooling technology, which works to minimize hot-spots.

In addition to the Core i7-4750HQ processor, it features 8 GB of RAM (expandable to 16 GB), SSD and HDD-based storage options, and connectivity that includes Bluetooth 4.0, 802.11 b/g/n WLAN, gigabit Ethernet, three USB 3.0 "SuperSpeed" ports, and a multi-format card reader. Windows 8 Pro comes pre-installed. Backed by a 1-year warranty, Zeus Hercules notebooks from CyberPowerPC start at US $1,039.

Dell unveiled its newest line of Ultrabooks, the Latitude 7000 series, which includes the 12.5-inch E7240, and 14-inch E7440. Both feature otherwise similar specs, which should narrow your search down to how big your Ultrabook should really be. Both are about 20 mm thick, feature 1366 x 768 pixels resolution with their displays, Core i3 "Haswell" 1.70 GHz dual-core processors, 4 GB of RAM, 128 GB SSD storage on the E7240, and 320 GB HDD storage on the E7440. The Latitude E7240 is priced at US $1,169, while the E7440 goes for $1,049.

In addition to the 15.6-inch GP60 Gaming Series, MSI rolled out the GP70 Gaming Series. This notebook features similar innards to the GP60, but with a larger 17.3-inch screen, which comes in 1600 x 900 and 1920 x 1080 options. Practically every other item on its specifications sheet, including a choice of Core "Haswell" processors, GeForce GT 740M graphics, up to 16 GB of RAM, hybrid drive with 24 GB NAND flash and 1 TB HDD, gaming-grade keyboard made by SteelSeries, connectivity that includes 802.11 b/g/n, gigabit Ethernet, Bluetooth 4.0, etc., are identical to that of the GP60. Measuring 418 x 269.3 x 39 mm, it weighs about 2.7 kg. Prices vary by configuration.

MSI rolled out its GP60 Gaming Series mid-range gaming notebook. It features the same styling as the rest of the Gaming Series, black with a dash of red. Its 15.6-inch screen comes in two variants, 1366 x 768 and 1920 x 1080 (options). A gaming-grade keyboard by SteelSeries decks up the bottom-half. On the left-hand side you'll find gold-plated headset jacks, with an audio device tuned for gaming headsets, and a pair of USB 3.0 ports; next to an air-vent. On the right-hand side, you get the gigabit Ethernet jack, D-Sub (VGA) and HDMI 1.4a connectors, next to a tray-loading optical drive, which can be either Blu-ray + DVDRW combo, or simply DVDRW. An SDIO slot supports SDXC cards.

Under the hood, the GP60 runs a 4th Generation Intel Core "Haswell" processor (options), up to 16 GB of DDR3-1600 MHz memory, and NVIDIA GeForce GT 740M graphics with 2 GB of DDR3 memory. MSI is deploying a hybrid drive, which combines 24 GB of NAND flash, with 1 TB of magnetic storage. Connectivity includes gigabit Ethernet, 802.11 b/g/n WLAN, and Bluetooth 4.0. A 6-cell 4,400 mAh battery powers the notebook. Measuring 383 x 249.5 x 32.3~37.6 mm, it tips the scales at around 2.4 kg. Prices vary by configuration.

With Core i7-4770K "Haswell" and Z87-based motherboard combos going for as low as $450, Intel is shaping its upcoming Core i7 "Ivy Bridge-E" HEDT platform in a way that doesn't create a big pricing gap between the two platforms, and that those with the monies for an i7-4770K + Z87 platform are sufficiently tempted to drop in a few extra coins for an HEDT platform.

To begin with, Core i7-4820K is expected to be priced at US $310, a whole $40 cheaper than the Core i7-4770K. This quad-core chip features 3.70 GHz clocks, 3.90 GHz maximum Turbo Boost, 10 MB of L3 cache, 48 PCI-Express gen 3.0 lanes, and a quad-channel memory controller; compared to the 3.60 GHz clocks, 3.90 GHz Turbo Boost, 8 MB L3 cache, 24 PCI-Express gen 3.0 lanes, and a dual-channel memory controller. To its credit, the i7-4770K features higher IPC thanks to its more advanced micro-architecture. Socket LGA2011 motherboards, such as Intel's DX79TO can be had for as low as $150. Tempting offer there.

Intel is expected to unveil its Core "Broadwell" processor family in the second half of 2014. "Broadwell" is an optical shrink of "Haswell" to Intel's new 14 nanometer silicon fab process, with a few tweaks. It's being reported that the "Broadwell" silicon will make it to mobile (notebook) platforms before desktops. Within 2H 2014, a bulk of Intel's Core mobile processor lineup will be based on the silicon, including H-series (for desktop replacements and all-in-one desktops, BGA), U (for Ultrabooks), Y (for tablets), and QM/XM (for mainstream notebooks).

It's the common desktop plaform that's shortchanged by Intel. There won't be socketed Core "Broadwell" CPUs any time in 2014. They'll probably arrive in 2015, they probably won't. Instead, Intel has a "Haswell" platform refresh planned for 2014, which will see Intel roll out speed-bumped Core i5 and Core i7 parts based on existing "Haswell" silicon, and at existing price-points. To compensate, Intel is expected to roll out the Haswell-E HEDT (high-end desktop) platform in 2H 2014, which succeeds the upcoming Core i7 "Ivy Bridge-E" platform, and introduces DDR4 system memory support.

While Apple's MacBook Air got its direly needed hardware upgrade this June, it left its MacBook Pro lineup untouched. The company plans to hold a press event in September, when it plans to unveil its next MacBook Pro lineup. These could include MacBook Pro driven by Core "Haswell" GT3e processors, which feature large integrated graphics cores, featuring 40 execution units, allowing it to do away with discrete GPUs, and improve battery life. A new rumor doing rounds in the tech circles states that Apple could make Intel build-to-order a new class of Haswell GT3e processors with even faster graphics cores than Iris 5200, the graphics core inside today's Core i7-4950HQ.

Intel is going in for the kill. The company has lowered the lowest SDP (Scenario Design Point, different from TDP) rating of Haswell based microprocessors from 6W to just 4.5W. The difference might not look like it's much (just 1.5W), but it is quite significant. While 6W wouldn't allow OEMs to use the processor in compact form factors like tablets, 4.5W will allow the same OEMs to go for fanless, passive-cooled Haswell powered tablets. Intel will ship very limited quantities of 4.5W SDP Haswell SKUs.

Of course, this opens up the possibility of these new Haswell chips to end up being used in Microsoft's next-generation Surface Windows 8 Pro tablet. If Intel manages to squeeze in an underclocked HD5000 GPU, there'll be nothing like it. Intel hasn't released any information regarding the exact specifications of the SKUs, pricing, or shipping dates.

The Acer Aspire S7-392, successor to the original Aspire S7 which was unveiled back in Computex 2012, has finally landed in the states. With a beautiful design and an ultra-high resolution display along with packing Intel's newest 4th generation Haswell based Core processors, Acer's refreshed Aspire S7-392 turned quite a few heads this year at Computex 2013.

As black and white have become the new trend colours in PC market, many end users are looking for suitable components to complete their colour-coordinated system configurations. In response to the increasing demand, Enermax now launches two special editions of the very popular ETS-T40 CPU cooler series. The black or white finish of the heat sinks is based on an innovative, thermo-conductive coating which does not affect the cooling performance. Along with the in-house developments for an optimized air stream conduction (Stack Effect Flow, Vortex Generator Flow and Vacuum Effect Flow), the thermal resistance of the new coolers could be reduced to sensationally low 0.085°C/W. That way, the ETS-T40 "Black Twister" (ETS-T40-BK) and ETS-T40 "White Cluster" (ETS-T40-W) with their relatively compact heat sink are able to keep pace with many high-end coolers.

CPU World has reported that while Intel already has an army of Haswell based dual-core processors in the pipeline, unofficial specifications for two new models, one belonging to the entry-level Celeron family and the other a part of the Core i5 lineup, have surfaced.

The Celeron 2955U, a U-series Haswell dual-core SKU will pack a core frequency of 1.4 GHz (no Turbo), no Hyper Threading (two cores and two threads), 2MB of last level L3 cache, 15W TDP, "Haswell HD Graphics" (which doesn't give us any clue whether it's the HD4400 or HD4600 or even something slower than that, but most definitely not the HD5000). The socket type for the Celeron part is BGA1168.
