USB Power Delivery Controller Shortage Could Impact Intel Tiger Lake Laptop Availability

When Intel launched its Tiger Lake processors for laptops, the company has foreseen a smooth integration by OEMs and plenty of design wins. While that has turned out to be true, there seems to be a big problem lurking in the OEM component supply chain. In the new Tiger Lake systems, the CPU carries support for Thunderbolt 4 and USB 4 technologies. However, these protocols can not work on their own, as they require external power delivery controllers (PDC) to function. These PDCs are used to regulate and control all of the power circulating in the USB specification, and they come in a form of a separate chip. This chip is later integrated into PCBs of various systems implementing these technologies.

Today, we have a report coming from Igor's LAB, in which we are told that the availability of these chips could be very bad. Intel's OEMs are using Texas Instruments (TI) 994AD PDC, however, as the supply of these chips becomes scarce, OEMs are turning to TI 993AC/994AC chips. Intel advises OEMs, carrying these chips in their systems, to only communicate benefits of Thunderbolt 4 and exclude USB 4 mentions, or to communicate benefits of Thunderbolt 4 and reference USB 4 "compatibility." This means that every OEM using the alternative chips will get Intel's Thunderbolt 4 certifications, as the company plans to temporarily issue certifications with these chips included, while the supply chain regulates. TI's 993AC/994AC are assumed to not have the power and regulation capability of the USB 4 as the 994AD PDC can.

Intel Xe-HPG DG2 GPU Specifications Leak, First GPUs are Coming in H2 2021 in Alder Lake-P Laptops

Yesterday, we got information that Intel's upcoming DG2 discrete graphics card is "right around the corner". That means that we are inching closer to the launch of Intel's discrete GPU offerings, and we are going to get another major player in the current GPU market duopoly. Today, however, we are in luck because Igor from Igor's LAB has managed to get ahold of the specifications of Intel's Xe-HPG DG2 graphics card. For starters, it is important to note that DG2 GPU will first come to laptops later this year. More precisely, laptops powered by Alder Lake-P processors will get paired with DG2 discrete GPU in the second half of 2021. The CPU and GPU will connect using the PCIe 4.0 x12 link as shown in the diagram below, where the GPU is paired with the Tiger Lake-H processor. Hundreds of Millions of Dell Laptops and Desktops Vulnerable to Privilege Escalation Attacks

Dell notebooks and desktops dating all the way back since 2009—hundreds of millions of them the PC giant has shipped since—are vulnerable to unauthorized privilege escalation attacks, due to a faulty OEM driver the company uses to update the computer's BIOS or UEFI firmware, according to findings by cybersecurity researchers at SentinelLabs. "DBUtil," a driver that Dell machines load during automated or unattended BIOS/UEFI update processes initiated by the user from within the OS, is found to have vulnerabilities that malware can exploit to "escalate privileges from a non-administrator user to kernel mode privileges."

SentinelLabs chronicled its findings in CVE-2021-21551, which details five individual flaws. Two of these point out flaws that can escalate user privileges through controlled memory corruption, two with lack of input validation; and one with denial of service. Organizations that have remote updates enabled for their client machines are at risk, since the flaw can be exploited over network. "An attacker with access to an organization's network may also gain access to execute code on unpatched Dell systems and use this vulnerability to gain local elevation of privilege. Attackers can then leverage other techniques to pivot to the broader network, like lateral movement," writes SentielLabs in its paper.

Alienware Launches m15 R5 Ryzen Edition Laptop With up to AMD Ryzen 9 5900HX and NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070

Dell's gaming subsidiary, Alienware, has launched a product designed to reintroduce products of a company that was abandoned in the laptop sector a long time ago. Alienware's last AMD-based gaming laptop made an appearance in 2007, and for 14 years there wasn't an Alienware laptop with an AMD processor inside it. For all those years, the heart of Alienware laptops was promised to Intel, however, that is no longer the case. Today, Alienware has introduced a Ryzen edition of the m15 R5 gaming laptop, powered by... you guessed it, AMD Ryzen 5000 series of mobile processors.

The new Alienware m15 R5 Ryzen Edition laptop is set to bring the balance to the force. Featuring AMD's flagship Ryzen 9 5900HX overclockable processor, the CPU is paired with NVIDIA's GeForce RTX 3070 graphics card. Bizarre/Interesting Tech on Crowdfunding Platforms: DUEX Portable Dual-screen Laptop Monitors

Continuing this series that began with the MSI gaming foot pedals, I came across Duex on Kickstarter today. Remember Razer's Project Valerie? It was the triple screen laptop concept shown off at CES 2017, but nothing came out of it from the company to this date. Duex, or rather Mobile Pixels Inc., first made the second-screen DUO that shipped in 2019, and then the triple screen TRIO that shipped last year and looks very bizarre and interesting to fit this series perfectly in my opinion. The company decided that their second-screen experience can be improved further, and have taken to crowdfunding again with two new models called the DUEX Lite and DUEX Plus,

The DUEX Lite is a 12.5" screen and the DUEX Plus a 13.3" model that also offers a few other features additional USB ports, an aluminium alloy frame, auto aspect ratio rotation, as well as increased compatibility with other mobile devices beyond laptops on an x86 platform. The screens are held in place on a magnetic base which allows them to be pushed back into the back of the laptop to make for a thick sandwich, as well as extended in either direction and pivoted to allow for a compact dual-screen experience on the go. The DUEX Lite has an advertised MSRP of ~$315 (their own numbers are off by $5 depending on the early bird tiers) and the DUEX Plus at ~$345, and currently can be had for much lower on Kickstarter as expected. Do keep in mind that the TRIO backers seem to have mostly received the package to their satisfaction, although some are still waiting and others have had issues. So if this interests you, please do some more reading on all this before backing the project, which ends in a little under a month from now.

Intel Prepares 19 Alder Lake Processors for Laptops Ranging from 5-55 Watts

As we are getting closer to the launch of Intel's next-generation Alder Lake processors, more information is getting leaked. Today, thanks to the leaked presentation slide, we have some more details regarding Intel's Alder Lake offerings in the laptop sector. As a reminder, Alder Lake uses a hybrid approach to core configuration with the similar mindset Arm's big.LITTLE works. There are a few smaller cores for processing smaller tasks that don't need much power and, of course, there are a few big cores that are used for heavyweight processing as some advanced applications require. The small cores are going to be based on the Gracemont microarchitecture, while the big one will use the Golden Cove design.

Thanks to @9550pro on Twitter, we have a slide that showcases 19 different Alder Lake configurations for the laptop segment. At the very bottom, there are configurations with a TDP of just five Watts. That is achieved by having just one big, four smaller cores, 48 EU Gen 12 GPU and that is meant for the tablet segment. Going up, we have different ranges depending on the application device, and the highest end is a chip with 55 Watts of power. That model has eight small and eight big cores, combined with 32 EUs of Gen 12 graphics. All models include integrated graphics. The variations of big and small cores have allowed Intel to have as many as 19 different SKUs, that cover every segment needed, by simply balancing the core count. You can check out the rest of the models below for yourself.

AMD Confirms Radeon RX 6000 Series Laptop GPUs are "Coming Soon"

AMD has just announced its Navi 22 RDNA 2 devices, spanning the middle-end gaming sector. The Radeon RX 6700 XT, which is the latest addition to the 6000 series of Radeon graphics cards, is carrying the Navi 22 chip inside it. However, AMD GPUs need to satisfy another sector in addition to the desktop market and that is the laptop/mobile market. With the past 5000 series of laptop GPUs, AMD has made a bit of a disappointing launch. Given the availability of the first-generation RDNA GPUs in mobile devices, many gamers were unable to find 5000 series Radeon GPUs in laptops, as it was rarely a choice. MSI and Dell have carried a few models with the Radeon RX 5500M and RX 5600M, and the highest-end Radeon RX 5700M availability was limited to Dell Alienware Area-51m R2 laptop.

During the announcement of Radeon RX 6700 XT, Scott Herkleman (CVP & GM AMD Radeon) has announced that AMD is preparing the launch of the next-generation RDNA 2 based RX 6000 series of graphics cards for mobile/laptop devices. While there should be a range of models based on Navi 22, Navi 23, and Navi 24, the availability is unknown for now. The only information we have so far is that it is "coming soon". The exact configurations of these chips remain a mystery until the launch happens, so we have to wait to find out more.

The new VAIO Z was designed for today's mobile computing needs. The VAIO Z's lighter yet more durable design makes mobility less cumbersome, more practical, and safer for work and learning needs.

ASUS ROG Zephyrus Duo 15 Owners are Applying Custom GPU vBIOS with Higher TGP Presets

With NVIDIA's GeForce RTX 30-series lineup of GPUs, laptop manufacturers are offered a wide variety of GPU SKUs that internally differ simply by having different Total Graphics Power (TGP), which in turn results in different clock speeds and thus different performance. ASUS uses NVIDIA's variant of GeForce RTX 3080 mobile GPU inside the company's ROG Zephyrus Duo (GX551QS) with a TGP of 115 Watts, and Dynamic Boost technology that can ramp up the card to 130 Watts. However, this doesn't represent the maximum for RTX 3080 mobile graphics card. The maximum TGP for RTX 3080 mobile goes up to 150 Watts, which is a big improvement that lets the GPU reach higher frequencies and more performance.

Have you ever wondered what would happen if you manually applied vBIOS that allows the card to use more power? Well, Baidu forum users are reporting a successful experiment of transforming their 115 W RTX 3080 to 150 W TGP card. Using GPU vBIOS from MSI Leopard G76, which features a 150 W power limit, and applying it to the ROG's Zephyrus Duo power-limited RTX 3080 cards is giving results. Users have successfully used this vBIOS to squeeze out more performance from their laptops. As seen on the 3D Mark Time Spy rank list, the entries are now dominated solely by modified laptops. Performance improvement is, of course, present and it reaches up to a 20% increase.

ASUS Publishes Full GeForce RTX 3000 Series Laptop GPU Specifications Including TGP and Frequency

On a request from Tweakers, ASUS has decided to reveal full GPU specifications for the entire laptop GPU lineup. Having NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3000 series GPUs in their laptops, companies were not committed to listing the TGP and whatever the GPU inside was a Max-Q or Max-P variant. That would confuse the average consumer and a GPU variant they got could be significantly slower than what they have expected. So to clear up the confusion, ASUS has decided to provide us with the table of GPU TGPs and frequencies found inside the company's laptops. Not only has ASUS published a table of TGPs and frequencies, but the company has also updated its website to reflect the exact TDP and exact frequency of any GPU used in a laptop to avoid any confusion and give consumers reassurance in their purchase. You can find the table of laptops with their exact GPU TGP and GPU clock speeds below.

Kosin Demonstrates RTX 3090 Running Via Ryzen Laptop's M.2 Slot

Kosin a Chinese subsidiary of Lenovo has recently published a video showing how they modded their Ryzen notebook to run an RTX 3090 from the NVMe M.2 slot. Kosin used their Xiaoxin Air 14 laptop with a Ryzen 5 4600U processor for the demonstration. The systems internal M.2 NVMe SSD was removed and an M.2 to PCIe expansion cable was attached allowing them to connect the RTX 3090. Finally, the laptop housing was modified to allow the PCIe cable to exit the chassis and a desktop power supply was attached to the RTX 3090 for power.

The system booted and correctly detected and utilized the attached RTX 3090. The system performed admirably scoring 14,008 points in 3DMark TimeSpy, for comparison the RTX 3090 paired with a desktop Ryzen 5 3600 scores 15,552, and when paired with a Ryzen 7 5800X scores 17,935. While this is an extreme example pairing an RTX 3090 with a mid-range mobile processor it goes to show the amount of performance achievable over the NVMe M.2 connector. The x4 PCIe 3.0 link of the laptop's M.2 slot could handle a maximum of 4 GB/s, while the x16 PCIe 3.0 slot on previous generation processors offered 16 GB/s, and the new x16 PCIe 4.0 connector doubles that providing 32 GB/s of available bandwidth.
