Eurocom Announces Sky Z7 R2 Laptop with Fully-Upgradeable Components

The EUROCOM Sky Z7 R2 has unmatched levels of upgradeability through the Mobile Supercomputer's modular slots, allowing the safe removal and replacement of important hardware components such as the laptop's CPU, GPU, Memory, Storage, LCD, and more. Having slots or sockets allows the Sky Z7 R2 to customized, upgraded and modified with compatible parts- giving this Eurocom Mobile Supercomputer the ability to run the most demanding applications and perform high level tasks for a very long time. As newer and improved technologies emerge within the same chipset, the EUROCOM Sky Z7 R2's hardware components such as the CPU, GPU, RAM, storage, LCD, to name a few, can all be upgraded and replaced relatively easy in order to acquire more power as desired. Having modular components greatly increases the laptop's lifespan for many years and prevents the cycle of having to buy new laptops every few years, which can be the case with most laptops that have non-upgradeable components.

Eurocom's Sky Z7 R2 is one of the few laptops that utilizes modular GPU technology based on the MXM 3.1 version 2.0 socket technology. This means the Mobile Supercomputer's high performance GPU can be replaced at any time as long as it is compatible in the chipset, allowing the EUROCOM Sky Z7 R2 to perform at an extremely high level throughout the duration of its long lifespan. This Mobile Supercomputer can be configured up to the GeForce RTX 3080 which delivers twice the performance as its previous generation counterpart (GeForce RTX 2080). The EUROCOM Sky Z7 R2 offers seamless and stutter-free 4K gaming at 60 FPS, as well as 8K video editing, rendering and gaming.
Intel Z590 Chipset & Upgradeable 11th Generation Intel CPUs
The EUROCOM Sky Z7 R2 uses the Intel Z590 Chipset, with support for Intel's latest 11th generation CPUs such as the Intel i9 11900K. The Intel Z590 Chipset also boasts considerable upgrades from previous chipsets such as more bandwidth, faster networking and connectivity, more ports (such as Thunderbolt 4) and most importantly- native PCIe 4.0 Gen4 support.

PCIe 4.0 Gen4 x4 Technology
The EUROCOM Sky Z7 R2 will have native support for PCIe 4.0 when using 11th Generation Intel (Rocket Lake) CPUs via one of its M.2 2280 SSD slots. PCIe 4.0 Gen 4 x4 technology is twice as fast as PCIe 3.0 and double the bandwidth. More specifically, PCIe 4.0 offers up to16 GT/s data transfer rate compared to PCIe 3.0's 8.0 GT/s data transfer rate. With this, the Sky Z7 R2 can utilize the fastest NVMe drives available today (such as the Samsung 980 Pro Gen 4.0 x4), which delivers read speeds up to 7000 MB/s, making it 2 times faster than PCIe 3.0 SSD's and 12.7 times faster than SATA SSDs.

Upgradeable up to 128 GB RAM and 32 TB NVMe Storage
Offering more modular and upgradeable components, EUROCOM Z7 R2's Memory/RAM is also easily upgradeable, offering up to 128 GB of modular DDR4 memory. This laptop's upgradeability does not stop there, with the Sky Z7 R2's three individual M.2 slots that support up to a whopping 32 terabytes of the fastest NVMe storage available today (PCIe 4.0 is supported). To add to the laptop's already impressive specs, the EUROCOM Sky Z7 R2 features high-speed Thunderbolt 4 technology along with a multitude of I/O ports, unmatched security, as well as award-winning network detection and prioritization via Killer E3000, with speeds up to 2.5 Gbps.

notebook manufacturers don't want us to buy upgradeable computers.
They want us to change our laptop every 3/4 years to maximize revenues...

Another "fully upgradeable" system. I always find this very misleading as there are generally a lot of limitations with laptop upgrades. I learned this the hard way. Right off the bat, the motherboard is not upgradeable, so its not appropriate to say that its "fully upgradeable". In addition, the Z590 chipset is going the way of the dodo since Alder Lake is using a new socket. So you can kiss goodbye to CPU upgrade too.

Dell is actually getting sued over this as we speak, over their Area 51m

Yeah, I saw the article. And I think its something waiting to happen. I don't believe in "fully upgradeable" laptop even if they are using desktop CPUs and MXM based GPUs. The motherboard chipset aside which we know will not be used with newer Intel processors, even the display connectivity and power requirement may result in a mandatory change of laptop if you want to get the latest and greatest CPU and GPU. I was denied a GPU upgrade from a boutique laptop maker in the past even though they market an upgradeable GPU, because of the reasons mentioned above.

"Upgradeable" needs to be taken with a heavy dose of scepticism too. If you can even find a compatible MXM module of the right variant with the existing cooling system/display connectivity etc, you will likely struggle with availability as they're not things typically sold in the consumer retail channels. Pricing is usually outrageous too, and just because it's technically upgradeable doesn't mean it's economically viable to upgrade just the MXM instead of upgrading to a whole new laptop.

Also, not that Eurocom are the sole offenders but I despise 4K displays in laptops. They're power hogs that cripple brightness levels and battery life compared to their 2560x1440 alternatives. It's not like you can realistically use them at 4K without scaling either and you need to be 30cm from the screen to resolve individual pixels, which is just stupid. Apple got displays "right" a long time ago by defining their Retina displays as "a display so sharp that pixels are not visible to the naked eye at viewing distance". Anything beyond that is just wasteful, and laptops cannot afford to be wasteful with either their battery or GPU.

IMO 1440p is beyond "Retina" for 17" laptops unless you are too close to the screen for it to be a sensible viewing distance. So Eurocom are offering 1080p which is below 'Retina', 4K which is far above 'Retina' and completely ignoring the sweet spot that many other manufacturers have sensibly picked. Your two screen options both suck, so what's the point in having options?
