TechPowerUp Impact: MSI Issues "OC Mode by Default" BIOSes

MSI today issued its first official statement on our investigation which found that the company had a pattern of sending reviewers samples with higher clock-speeds out-of-the-box, than what retail cards offer out-of-the-box, by means of enabling a higher software overclock profile by default, which consumers otherwise had to enable using the MSI Gaming app. We had argued that this practice was deceptive and the review samples weren't 100% representative of retail cards.

The company today released corrective BIOS updates for at least two Gaming series graphics cards, the MSI GTX 1080 Gaming X, and the GTX 1070 Gaming X, which enable the "OC mode" clock-speed profile by default. These BIOS updates enable you to have "OC mode" clock speeds without you having to install the MSI Gaming app to enable them. The company, however, did not mention whether the cards that are currently under production will ship with "OC mode" out of the box, going forward. Without that assurance, this is a farcical workaround which will appease only those bold and skilled enough to update graphics card BIOSes, and not corrective action.

EVGA Cashes in on Tweaked Review Sample Anger

Cashing in on anger against the likes of MSI and ASUS for sending out graphics card review samples with higher out-of-the-box clock speeds than retail cards, EVGA put out a press release, stating that it never indulges in such deceptive practices as putting up "fake" reviews, or sending out cards with "tweaked clock-speeds" to reviewers, adding that with EVGA, "what you see is what you get."

Last week, we unearthed a disturbing pattern of MSI and ASUS sending out graphics card review samples with higher clock speeds out-of-the-box than what consumers get in their retail cards, out-of-the-box. Till date, we have not received any follow-up statements on the matter from either company.

MSI Releases the GTX 1080 and GTX 1070 SeaHawk EK X Series Graphics Cards

MSI is proud to announce an expansion in the GAMING graphics card line up with the MSI GeForce GTX 1080 SEA HAWK EK X and MSI GeForce 1070 SEA HAWK EK X. Based on the new NVIDIA GeForce GTX 10 series, the graphic cards are equipped with an EK high performance full cover water block to fulfill the demands of extreme performance. This ground breaking partnership which spawned the MSI GeForce GTX 1080 SEA HAWK EK X and MSI GeForce GTX 1070 SEA HAWK EK X is the next step towards an even better gaming experience. These graphics cards combine MSI's top-notch graphics card engineering with the dominant water cooling expertise by EK. The supreme liquid cooling performance guarantees a stable, silent GAMING experience.

Looking for some DIY fun? The SEA HAWK EK X comes with a pre-installed water block out of the box. This eliminates the need to remove the cooler or make any other changes to the graphics card and risking causing damage to it. Simply connect the SEA HAWK EK X to the water loop in any gaming rig, and create the ultimate water cooled gaming rig.

MSI and ASUS Send VGA Review Samples with Higher Clocks than Retail Cards

MSI and ASUS have been sending us review samples for their graphics cards with higher clock speeds out of the box, than what consumers get out of the box. The cards TechPowerUp has been receiving run at a higher software-defined clock speed profile than what consumers get out of the box. Consumers have access to the higher clock speed profile, too, but only if they install a custom app by the companies, and enable that profile. This, we feel, is not 100% representative of retail cards, and is questionable tactics by the two companies. This BIOS tweaking could also open the door to more elaborate changes like a quieter fan profile or different power management.

MSI's factory-overclocked GeForce GTX 1080 Gaming X graphics card comes with three software-defined clock-speed profiles, beginning with the "Gaming Mode," which is what the card runs at, out of the box, the faster "OC mode," and the slower "Silent mode," which runs the card at reference clock speeds. To select between the modes, you're expected to install the MSI Gaming software from the driver DVD, and use that software to apply clock speeds of your desired mode. Turns out, that while the retail cards (the cards you find in the stores) run in "Gaming mode" out of the box, the review samples MSI has been sending out, run at "OC mode" out of the box. If the OC mode is how the card is intended to be used, then why make OC mode the default for reviewers only, and not your own customers?

A completely new custom 10-phase PCB design using Military Class 4 components with 8+6-pin power connectors enables higher overclocking performance to push your graphics card to the max. The classy matte black solid metal backplate gives the card more structural strength and provides a nice finishing touch.

The card ships with factory-overclocked speeds of 1607 MHz core, 1797 MHz GPU Boost, and 8108 MHz (GDDR5-effective) memory, against reference clock speeds of 1506/1683/8008 MHz.

MSI Gaming Z and Gaming X Differentiated Some More

We found out more information on what sets MSI Gaming Z series graphics cards apart from the Gaming X series. The Gaming X series cards, such as the GeForce GTX 1080 Gaming X, which was part of the company's first wave of GTX 1080 cards, is the middle grade of the Gaming series. The Gaming Z series (such as the GTX 1080 Gaming Z, which is coming soon), is the top-tier variant.

The Gaming X GTX 1080 features double ball bearing fans, a few gamer-specific features though MSI Gaming Control Center, a back-plate, and a significant factory OC. The Gaming Z, on the other hand, gives you all the features of the Gaming X, but higher clock speeds, and a custom RGB LED setup lining the top logo and an MSI "Dragon" logo on the back-plate.

MSI Grades its Gaming Series Graphics Card Lineup

With the GeForce 10 Series, MSI is beginning to sub-brand its Gaming series graphics cards, so it could offer them at multiple price-points. The company launched its GTX 1080 lineup with the GTX 1080 Gaming X. The "X" here denotes a middle-grade (for features and clock speeds). A notch above this, is the GTX 1080 Gaming Z (yet to be launched, comes with the most features and highest clock speeds). There will be a third brand-extension, which will succeed the "LE" extension from previous generations. It could very well just be "Gaming" (no letters next to it). These cards look custom-design, but feature reference or close to reference clock speeds. Below are the pictures of the MSI GeForce GTX 1080 Gaming Z (not yet launched), and the GeForce GTX 1070 Gaming X.

MSI Makes a Big Push into Gaming Peripherals

MSI is making a big push into the gaming peripherals market, under its MSI Gaming banner. The company dabbled with gaming peripherals for a couple of years now, but didn't manage to make a mark. That's until now. The company appears to have big marketing plans for its new lines of gaming headsets, keyboards, and mice. Below are some of the first pictures of a pair of new gaming mice, an aluminium mousepad, a mechanical keyboard, and two new headsets.

MSI Gaming Custom-design SLI HB Bridge Pictured

Here some of the first pictures of an NVIDIA add-in card (AIC) partner branded SLI-HB (high-bandwidth) bridge. This kind of bridge is recommended for use with GeForce "Pascal" graphics cards, at high resolutions, such as 4K @ 60 Hz with HDR, 4K @ 120 Hz, 5K, and above. Pictured here is a 2-way SLI HB bridge with 2U spacing (1-slot gap between the two cards). The bridge appears to have a red LED of its own, lighting up the MSI Gaming dragon logo. At this point it's not clear whether the bridge comes included with the cards, or if it needs to be purchased separately. The cards being bridged in these pictures are the MSI GeForce GTX 1080 Gaming Z, a notch above the GTX 1080 Gaming X the company debuted its custom GTX 1080 lineup with.

MSI Teases its First Intel 200-series Chipset Motherboard

This could very well be the first picture of a socket LGA1151 motherboard based on Intel's upcoming 200-series chipset, which succeeds the 100-series. Named the Z2T0-Anniversary (is that a typo for Z270-Anniversary?), the board is likely based on the chipset that succeeds the Z170-Express (Z270-Express?), and will be timed with Intel's launch of the 7th generation Core "Kaby Lake" processors. MSI did not finalize the board's aesthetics (heatsink design, PCB markings), but the development board seems pretty loaded with features, that rival the current Z170A-Gaming M7 (we know this from the 6-layer PCB markings). MSI says that the board will be launched in November, 2016.
