SanDisk Corporation today unveiled a solid-state storage solution that works in conjunction with a PC's hard drive to store and launch the computer's operating system and software applications when needed. The new SanDisk Vaulter Disk, which is a flash-based PCI Express module, tag-teams with your laptop or desktop computers' hard drive to provide enhanced performance and lower load times. Both Vaulter and the hard drive are integrated into the PC and operate simultaneously, while maintaining a low cost per gigabyte. The SanDisk Vaulter Disk will be offered to original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) early next year in capacities from 8GB to 16GB.

At this year's Games Convention ASUS is showing off their new RD780 M3A-MVP motherboard. It will feature the new Socket AM2+, but it will be able to handle any AM2 CPU along with the new Phenoms. It will also be able to run DDR2 up to 8500 (1066MHz) speeds, and it will feature two PCI-E 2.0 compliant x16 slots.

As the high-end R600 cards require an 8-pin PCI-Express power cable to be plugged into the corresponding connector (look at the pictures of the HD 2900XT and OEM XTX) especially if you intend to overclock these, power supply manufacturers started to design adapter cables for their current iteration of PSUs that don't come with 8-pin PCIe cables natively. PCI-SIG, the Special Interest Group responsible for PCI Express industry-standard I/O technology, today announced the availability of the PCI Express External Cabling 1.0 specification, which extends the PCI Express (PCIe) interconnect architecture "outside the box." Cables using the PCIe technology will be used for external applications, as well as applications internal to an enclosure that need a cable connection. The PCIe External Cabling specification provides guidelines for a practical cable length, but does not currently set a maximum cable distance.

It is no surprise that the current 75W six-pin power connector isn't giving graphics cards enough electricity. The NVIDIA 8800GTX uses two connectors to give it enough power, and we can only speculate as to how much power AMD's upcoming R600 will use. And so, a new eight-pin power connector has been leaked, and should arrive just in time to power the R600 (if needed).

BEAVERTON, Ore. - January 15, 2007 - PCI-SIG , the Special Interest Group responsible for PCI Express industry-standard I/O technology, today announced the availability of the PCI Express Base 2.0 specification. After a 60-day review of revision 0.9 of the specification in Fall 2006, members of the PCI-SIG finalized and released PCI Express (PCIe) 2.0, which doubles the interconnect bit rate from 2.5GT/s to 5GT/s to support high-bandwidth applications.

Many have been wauting for card manufacturers to make good use of the PCIe x1 or x4 slots available on modern mainboards - especially with the number of traditional PCI slots diminishing rapidly. Creative will be offering the X-Fi as a PCIe x1 variant for $129 Dollars. The PCB is kept in blue which goes against the usual black color of PCI based X-Fi cards. The card carries one relatively small X-Fi chip, an unknown audio codec, the lack of onboard memory buffer, relatively small number of capacitors, the absence of MIDI port and the presence of S/P DIF connectors and five analog connectors to attack 7.1-channel audio system.

When an NVIDIA GeForce 8800 is plugged into a PCIe x16 slot, it works just fine. However, if it is plugged into an x8 slot or less, the graphics card will not boot. The Problem? Plain and simple incompatibility. Not only are they not listed in the PCI Express Integrators List, but there have been several reports of people sticking their 8800 in a PCI Express x8 slot and being sorely disappointed at the failure to boot. An X-bit labs review also showed that the 8800 series may not even be compatible with some mainboards. Basically, if you are buying an 8800 series, make sure you're not getting a second one before ensuring that you have two PCI Express lanes operating at full speed.
