Razer Solves Wireless Gaming Mice' Biggest Put Off: Weight

Razer 2018 International CES, demonstrated its solution to the biggest complaint serious gamers have with wireless gaming mice - their weight. Wireless mice run on batteries, and even if not bulky AAA ones, the relatively lighter lithium ion batteries in some of the more expensive wireless mice still add unnecessary weight that affects gameplay, particularly in games that demand rapid mouse movements. This isn't that much of a problem for non-gamers. Razer's solution to the problem is an implementation of electromagnetic induction, the same phenomenon that enables things like wireless charging, transformers, and modern human civilization to function.

The new Razer Mamba HyperFlux is a two-piece product - first is the mouse itself, that looks like a Razer Mamba, one of the company's most popular ambidextrous gaming mice; and second - the Razer Firefly HyperFlux mousepad. This is a medium-size, 4:3 cloth mousepad, which has an induction coil underneath. The surface is detachable (for cleaning). The mousepad plugs into one of your USB ports for power, while the mouse talks to your PC over a wireless USB dongle. The mouse needs this particular mousepad to function, which sparks an interesting debate on the logic behind this product.

Razer Also Announces Quad-Core, 8th Gen Intel Powered Blade Stealth Laptop

Razer today has also announced a revamp of their Blade Stealth laptop, which sees the introduction of the latest generation of Intel processors. The new Razer Blade Stealth features the i7-8550U processor - a quad-core, Hyper Threading (HT) enabled processor that brings eight threads to bear - albeit clocked at a low 1.8 GHz base and a staggering 4.0 GHz max single-core Turbo. This means this is the first version of the Razer Blade Stealth to sport such a core configuration, which should aid in both gaming and production environments. Don't let yourself be fooled, though - the 8th Gen here doesn't mean Coffee Lake. Intel has done all of us the favor of mixing things up a little, and their mobile 8th Gen architecture is actually "Kaby Lake Refresh".

Razer Announces Revised eGPU Dock, the Core V2

Razer today announced a doubling down on their push towards high-performance eGPU enclosures, which look to allow users of mobile computers (read, laptops and similar form factor) to enjoy the full power of a desktop-level graphics adapter. The Core V2 maintains the same visual design as the original Core, and to be honest, users would be hard pressed to find any relevant changes.

It maintains the exact same specifications, but Razer say they have re-engineered the internal components so as to allow for increased width of graphics cards (which are converted to height in the Razer Core). Alongside a reworked port layout on the back of the unit, those are all the changes that can be gleaned. The Core V2 will be available soon for $499.

The mouse offers a continuum of scroll wheel resistances to choose from. The scroll wheel can be adjusted via a dial on its underside for increased or decreased resistance to fit the preferences of each gamer. This can be especially useful for gamers who bind jump to their scroll wheel and are looking to adjust the jump activation to a preferred level of resistance. The Razer Basilisk is equipped with a removable clutch for easy access to additional mouse actions. The default clutch setting allows gamers to temporarily lower their DPI to instantaneously switch between high DPI close-quarters fighting and low DPI precision shooting. The clutch is fully programmable and can be set for push-to-talk, item pick-up, or any other actions. The clutch comes in two different lengths (short/long) to cater to different hand sizes. A rubber thumb cap is also included for players who prefer the mouse without the clutch.

Razer to Introduce New Color Options for Their Peripherals Lineup

Razer has announced that they will be offering two different color schemes for some of their peripherals, deviating from the black and green color scheme the company has made its hallmark. The new colors will be mercury white or gunmetal grey, as the company puts them (just white or grey wouldn't do, as you surely understand.) The new color schemes will be available at first on their Blackwidow X Chroma mechanical keyboard, Kraken 7.1 headset, Lancehead TE mouse, and Invicta mousepad. The sleeved cables for each peripheral will also sport the appropriate color change.

This difference will be purely cosmetic, in no way impacting the MSRP of the differently-colored peripherals. The Invicta mousepad, however, might offer some decreased performance in its new mercury white color scheme, since mice sensors typically work best on dark surfaces. The Razer Blackwidow X Chroma gunmetal grey and mercury white color schemes are only available for the US layout so far.
