ASUS Republic of Gamers Announces ROG Loki Availability

ASUS Republic of Gamers (ROG) today announced the availability of the ROG Loki—the high-performance, high-wattage PSU series in a striking SFX-L form. Packed with large ROG heatsinks for rapid cooling, integrated ARGB lighting to project personal style and axial-tech fans for whisper-quiet operation, the Loki series is pumped and primed to power small-form-factor (SFF) builds.

Large showcase rigs will always be the lifeblood of the PC-building community, but SFF builds have become increasingly popular in recent years. It's easy to see why: for those that want a build that can comfortably fit on a smaller desk, or in an entertainment center for TV gaming, a Mini-ITX machine is the perfect choice. But cramming next-gen power into a tiny case can be a challenge, especially with the added heat those components can produce. ROG's new Loki power supplies were designed to keep efficiency up and footprint down, empowering avid PC DIYers to build no-compromise, console-crushing clones.

computer-1, a Mini-ITX chassis

While setting up their first office many years ago, teenage engineering set out to create their ideal PC case. It was to have a small desktop footprint and be easy to move around. They built it with a laser cutter, high density board and spray paint. A simple, no frills computer case computer-1 has always been a work in progress. the board version worked ok, but the handles couldn't support the weight of the case when moving it around. so after some literal computer crashes, they turned to aluminium for a lighter and sturdier design.

Based on the build-it-yourself design of the pocket operator modular, they landed on the simple Mini-ITX case that they use today. A small desk footprint, compact and portable, computer-1 has a small desk footprint. the lightweight aluminium, and chrome handles, make it easier to move around when you have to. In powder coated pure orange RAL 2004, it's a small, no frills tool for any desktop. Built around the Mini-ITX motherboard and the SFX power supply format, it also fits a dual slot graphics card up to 170 mm. while compact, it's capable of housing a range of parts. From gamer to programmer, engineer and designer, the chassis can be equipped with whatever components you wish.
Update Nov 22nd: Our in-depth review of the computer-1 is live now.

SilverStone Intros SUGO 16 Cube-Type Mini-ITX Case

SilverStone introduced the SUGO 16, a cube-shaped compact Mini-ITX case, designed for gaming PCs. Available in black (model: SST-SG16B) and white (SST-SG16W) variants, the case measures 200 mm (W) x 232 mm (H) x 280 mm (D), dry-weighing 2.66 kg. It serves up room for a Mini-ITX or Mini-DTX motherboard with up to two expansion slots. A cut-out in the front lets you easily slide in your graphics card, to which the case offers a maximum clearance of 27.5 cm (14.7 cm max height). The case gives you a choice of using either an ATX or an SFX PSU. When using an ATX PSU, the maximum CPU cooler height is 8.5 cm (enough for an AIO block or low-profile fan-heatsinks); but if an SFX PSU is used, you get room for up to 17.2 cm cooler height, which is plenty for tower-type coolers.

Using an SFX power supply also creates room for a single-fan radiator to be mounted along the case's front fan vent. The PSU bay opens out toward the front, hidden behind the front panel. An AC extension leads to a receptacle at the back. The rear has a 120 mm fan vent that can hold either a 120 mm rear exhaust fan, or a 3.5-inch HDD, or a 2.5-inch SSD (as mounts). Internally, there's just the one 2.5-inch bay. Behind the motherboard tray, there's a strategically located cutout letting you access the M.2-2280 slot that's typically located at the reverse side of the PCB for modern Mini-ITX motherboards. The SilverStone SUGO 16 is expected to go on sale later this week in Asia, at a price roughly equivalent to USD $90. It will reach Europe and North America in December.

SilverStone Rolls Out Lucid LD03-AF Case, Improved VGA Airflow vs. Original LD03

SilverStone rolled out the Lucid series LD03-AF (Airflow version) tower-type case for Mini-ITX and Mini-DTX form-factor platforms, a new variant of the LD03 case from Q1-2019. The case was debuted at the 2020 International CES. What sets the LD03-AF apart from the original LD03 is additional vents on one of the front-facing side panels, designed to improve airflow for graphics cards that feature axial fans. The original LD03 had a slab of glass that smothered graphics cards. Although essentially a cuboid, the case is meant to be displayed with its right side pillars facing forward, as the main glasshouse spans the front and right side panel. Inside, the motherboard tray is aligned perpendicular to the plane of the base, but with its I/O shield pointing upward, such that your graphics card stands along the height of the case.

The LD03-AF serves up room for graphics cards up to 30.9 cm in length, and 16.7 cm in height; and CPU coolers up to 19 cm in height. Corsair Recalls SF Series of PSUs due to Failure Concerns

Corsair's SF series of PSUs has been long present as part of the company's offerings, designed to the satisfy small form factor crowd with its SFX size. Today, Corsair has announced that they will be recalling some units and replace them free of charge, including free shipping. Corsair says that "We have recently identified higher-than-normal RMA rates among our SF family of small-form-factor PSUs. Following a thorough investigation, we have found a potential issue that can manifest when the PSU is exposed to a combination of both high temperatures, and high humidity. This regrettably can cause the PSU to fail. This issue potentially affects units in lot codes 194448xx to 201148xx, manufactured between October 2019 and March 2020."

The problem is located in the AC conversion part of the PSU, not the DC one which interacts with PC components, so Corsairs points out that all of the components are safe even if PSU fails. To get a replacement PSU, Corsair offers affected customers to submit their tickets here, with the title "SF Series voluntary product replacement", so they can easily identify customers and give them quicker replacement units.

FSP at CES 2020: A Next-Gen Pure 12V PSU, and a UPS That Wants to See the World

Fortron's consumer brand, FSP, brought a handful new power products to CES 2020, besides its already launched CMT710 premium gaming chassis, the Hydro G Pro premium modular PSU from mid-2019, and Dagger Pro SFX PSUs. The inconspicuous-looking FSP500-30AKB looks like a cheap OEM-included PSU with rear 80 mm exhaust, which comes included with your case, and which you immediately discard. Only that it's possibly the most innovative thing FSP brought to CES. This PSU is being designed for Intel's upcoming PC spec that does away with the 5 V, 5 Vsb, and 3.3 V power domains altogether.

The pure-12 V PSU has only two domains: +12 V and +12 Vsb. What this means is a goodbye to the bulky 24-pin ATX power connector. The PSU only feeds 12 V to your motherboard, which uses onboard VRM and DC-to-DC switching to put out the lower voltage domains, including power for your SATA storage devices. The 24-pin connector is effectively reduced to a new 10-pin connector that only has 12 V and 12 Vsb cabling. Other cables include 8-pin EPS connectors for your CPU VRM, and 6+2 pin PCIe connectors for your graphics cards. EPS and PCIe power are purely 12 V-based standards already. The 5-pin connector is less than half as thick as your 24-pin connector, and 2 pins wider than an EPS connector. Some of the more premium PSUs may user thicker gauge wires for this connector.

Silverstone at CES 2020: Cases, PSUs, and Accessories Galore

Silverstone at CES 2020 took the opportunity to showcase selections of their portfolio for the media, ranging from PC cases in major form-factors, PSUs, and a range of "ease-of-life" and aesthetic-driven accessories. Accessory-wise, there's a range of SSD-related products, such as the MS09 stick, which allows conversion of an M.2 SSD to what basically amounts to a USB 3.1 pen drive; other products in this category include the MS09-Mini and the MS11, which improves support for the NVMe protocol. The ECM26 is a PCIe adapter for M.2 sticks, while the Silverstone TP02-M2 presents itself as a heatsink for installation on non-passive-cooled M.2 SSDs.

Continuing the SSD accessories galore, there are a number of other solutions, including a tool-less NMVe to PCIe adapter (ECM21-E), an ARGB powered one (ECM24-ARGB, which includes a heatsink), a simpler, non-ARGB one with a heatsink (ECM23), and my personal favorite, a docking station for a barebones M.2 drive you may have around, in the form of the TS16 station. The presence of a Power button very surely means this can't be hot-swapped - the risk of data-loss is real.
