G.Skill displayed its Phoenix Pro series solid state drives (SSDs), while up the transfer rates slightly from its TRIM-supportive predecessor, the Phoenix. A-Data Ready with SATA 6 Gb/s and Turbo SSDs

A-Data showed off two lines of 2.5" internal SSDs, the S501 and S596 Turbo. The S501 uses the SATA 6 Gb/s interface, and has transfer rates that could use the additional bandwidth at its disposal. The S501 reads at 350 MB/s, and writes at 200 MB/s. It makes use of 34 nm MLC NAND flash chips, and 128 MB of cache. It will be available in capacities of up to 512 GB.

The S596 Turbo is a upgraded version of the original S596, it uses SATA 3 Gb/s and mini USB 2.0 interface. The 128 MB of cache in place is of DDR2 type. The SSD can read at speeds of up to 280 MB/s, and write at 180 MB/s. It is available in capacities of up to 256 GB.

OCZ Technology Ready with SandForce Driven RevoDrive PCI-Express SSD

OCZ Technology is ready with a new PCI-Express SSD that harnesses the power of SandForce SSD processors. Called the RevoDrive, the drive's design is based around placing two SF-1200 driven SSDs onto an addon card, connected to a RAID controller, which connects to the system bus over PCI-Express x4. The internal RAID 0 volume can stay abstract to the host. It is expected to be bootable.

The drive makes use of Multi Level Cell (MLC) NAND flash chips, and can churn out transfer rates of 540 MB/s read and 490 MB/s write. RunCore Intros Kylin II Enterprise SSDs with SAS Interface

RunCore released enterprise-grade variants of its Kylin II series SSDs which it introduced a few months ago in the consumer SATA interface form. The new variants come in 2.5" and 3.5" form-factors, and use the Serial attached SCSI (SAS) interface. Kylin II uses single-level cell (SLC) NAND flash, though multi-level cell (MLC) variants are also available. The Kylin II features native ECC to eliminate read/write errors. Despite the ECC overhead, the drives manage read/write speeds of up to 270 and 260 MB/s, respectively. The SandForce SF-1500 SSD processor makes use of 64 MB cache memory. The Kylin II comes in capacities ranging from 50 GB to 400 GB. Although RunCore didn't let out its pricing or availability, it is expected to cost a premium for being enterprise-grade.

Buffalo Intros USB 3.0 Portable SSD

Buffalo rolled out the SHD-PEHU3 series of portable solid state drives that are compatible with the new SuperSpeed USB 3.0 interface. The new interface enables the portable SSD to work with transfer-speeds typical of PC SSDs - up to 244 MB/s, with the Turbo PC drivers. The drives measure 97 (W) x 57 (H) x 12 (D) mm, weighing just 66 g. They are backwards-compatible with USB 2.0 and USB 1.1. Buffalo bundles data encryption software with the drive. The SHD-PEHU3 is offered in capacities of 64 GB, 128 GB, and 256 GB; priced at $282, $510 and $1,079, respectively, in the Japanese market. Availability is expected in late May.

Samsung Ships Industry’s First Multi-chip Package with a PRAM Chip

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., the world leader in advanced semiconductor technology solutions, today announced the industry's first multi-chip package (MCP) with PRAM - for use in mobile handsets beginning later this quarter.

Like the original Colossus series, these SSDs come in the 3.5" form-factor, and are compatible with the SATA 3 Gb/s interface. The new features Colossus LT brings to the table are the use of lower-power 34 nm MLC NAND flash chips, two internal NAND-flash sets controlled by Indilinx Barefoot controllers, set in an internal RAID 0 array. The array is abstract to the host. There is 128 MB of cache on board. The drive offers read/write speeds of 260 MB/s, 15,000 IOPS on 4K random access, and sustained speeds of 220 MB/s. It comes in four capacities: 120 GB, 250 GB, 500 GB, and 1 TB, which are priced at US $ $399, $799, $1,549, and 2875 EUR, respectively. They come with an MTBF of 1 million hours, and warranty of 3 years.
