"Outcast - A New Beginning" Director Discusses Open World Mechanics

Every choice we made when developing Outcast - A New Beginning had, at its core, one motivation: freedom. It was important to us not to limit where players could go at any point; instead, we gave them the tools to navigate the detailed open world we've spent the last few years crafting. We're incredibly proud of Outcast's world and want players to share its richness with us. As players set out across Adelpha, we want to reward them for their curiosity and sense of adventure. Whether it's blitzing through an invader base and unlocking a new weapon module, zipping through gliding challenges to earn jetpack upgrades, or simply taking in the sights, we've strived to make every second spent on the planet of Adelpha feel meaningful to players.

Traveling in style
Knowing that players would be spending a lot of time in Cutter Slade's boots, it was important to us that it felt fun to maneuver him through the world. Open-world games often ask players to cross great distances, and it's our job as developers to ensure that you always feel invigorated by navigating the wilds of Adelpha. When designing how Cutter moved through the world, we didn't want to gatekeep fun traversal abilities for later in the game. From early in Outcast - A New Beginning, you can take advantage of Adelpha's teetering precipices and deep valleys with your gliding suit, swooping across the alien landscape.

Alone in the Dark Gets New In-Engine Trailer and Full PC System Requirements

THQ Nordic has released a new in-engine trailer for the upcoming new Alone in the Dark game, showing a bit more details about the game story and characters. In addition, THQ Nordic has also released full PC system requirements for the game, that will launch on March 20th.

According to the developers, the game will have different story endings and characters in the game will react differently, depending on who you choose to play as, Edward Carnby or Emily Hartwood. Creative Director, Mikael Hedberg, was keen to note that the most important part of the game is the place, as the game is a haunted mansion story at its very core, so they needed to make sure to "recreate Derceto again".

Trine 5: A Clockwork Conspiracy - a Recent Hidden Gem?

A few new releases from last week flew under the radar with the meteoric response to Starfield's early access, especially since the Xbox Wire crew was all-hands on deck to support the launch. But there was one new title I knew I wanted to bump to the top of my playlist, as I've adored all the previous games in the series. Trine 5: A Clockwork Conspiracy will take Amadeus the Wizard, Zoya the Thief, and Pontius the Knight on their most action-packed journey yet! With their reputations tarnished, loved ones in danger, and their own magical powers at stake, the Heroes of Trine must reunite to push back a fearsome Clockwork army and bring peace and justice to the land! I've always been bewildered by the Trine series. It's not fair to call a game with five releases - each one a bit bigger and better than its predecessor - a hidden gem. Perhaps, "rare gem" is more befitting. But it is a true treasure indeed - a fun, feature-filled series with a rich story, vibrant characters, and epic adventure.

Once Upon a Time…
The Trine series is a collection of fantasy action-adventure games with equal shares of platforming and puzzle elements sprinkled in about three heroes: a knight, a thief, and a wizard. The heroes are bound together by a magical artifact called the Trine and must work together using their unique skills to solve puzzles, fight enemies, and explore breathtaking environments.

THQ Nordic Reschedules Alone in the Dark's Launch, Arriving Early 2024

Horror games thrive on the delicate balance of tension, exploiting our vulnerability and the eerie embrace of solitude. Envision yourself traversing a dimly lit house in the dead of night, where faint whispers and unidentifiable noises send shivers down your spine. Now, picture this unsettling scenario not alone, but accompanied by a group of 28 intriguing individuals. The fear factor dwindles, doesn't it? Hence, the anticipated release of Alone in the Dark will gracefully step away from the chaotic October 2023 launch window.

Reasons
Our intention is to avoid competing with the wake of Alan's epic release and to evade the dazzling skyline of cities adorned by the graceful swings of Spiderman. We aim to truly remain as Alone in the Dark as possible. To honor this, the spine-chilling horror game has been rescheduled to unveil its horrors on January 16th, 2024. This extension will serve a dual purpose: not only will it permit us to meticulously perfect the gaming experience, but it will also grant us the opportunity to fully immerse ourselves in the remarkable releases of October.

Jagged Alliance 3 Coming to PC in July

When people talk about turn-based tactics games, very often Jagged Alliance is mentioned as one of the legendary forefathers of the genre. Dead Island 2 Launch Trailer Arrives Alongside 30 Minutes of Leaked Footage

Deep Silver's intended hype train, has been derailed slightly today, for its forthcoming zombie splattering blockbuster ARPG shooter Dead Island 2. A launch trailer was uploaded to the game's official YouTube channel this afternoon, in hope of generating more pre-release internet interest. The uptick in marketing efforts has gained some gaming community attention, but leaked gameplay footage was uploaded to YouTube only hours before the debuting of the official launch video. A streamer identifying as Lucas Cosmico is reported to have played a pre-release version of Dead Island 2 last night, and proceeded to stream the opening moments of the single player campaign - 30 minutes of gameplay footage is still accessible on their YouTube channel at the time of writing, but potential legal action is likely to result in a takedown order.

The Dead Island 2 development cycle has not been a pleasant experience for those involved, according to multiple news pieces reported across the project's lifespan of more than a decade. Several studios have worked on the game, but publisher Deep Silver sought to remove the involvement of Yager and Sumo Digital at different stages of development. Dambuster Studios was declared, by THQ Nordic back in 2019, as the final resting place for Dead Island 2's production push. The Nottingham, UK-based studio happens to be a subsidiary of Deep Silver - the studio was offloaded to D.S. by Crytek in 2014, following substantial financial difficulties.

Embracer Group Acquires Metro Exodus Developer 4A Games, Other Developers

Embracer Group, parent company of THQ Nordic, has been on a roll of IP and developer embracings in the past years, and has now added quite the independent heavyweight to its belt. 4A Games, best known for the Metro games franchise, has been acquired by the group. 4A Games will undoubtedly continue work on another installment of the Metro franchise, which has the original author of the novels the games are based on, Dmitry Glukhovsky, attached to the project as writer. Saber solidifies its position as a leader in the CIS and Ukrainian game developer market. Combining our technology and capabilities with 4A Games presents tremendous opportunity for growth and expansion."

Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning Confirmed

The original Kingdoms of Amalur was an expansive voyage through well-known fantasy tropes, one that was received with relative acclaim, even if its overall storyline left something to be desired. A strange fact indeed, considering the game's story and lore were penned by none other than acclaimed fantasy author R. A. Salvatore, with input from Spawn creator Todd McFarlane and The Elder Scrolls: Oblivion lead designer Ken Rolston. Developer 38 Studios shut down the doors relatively close to the gamers' release on account of sales not being enough for the company to pay for a loan granted towards the games' development by the state of Rhode Island. And thus story could have been left written, with thoughts of a eventual sequels and even a franchise being put to rest.

Cue THQ Nordic (who have been on a roll when it comes to both IP and studio acquisitions in the last few years) and the story might have a different ending. In fact, it will, as the company has just confirmed a soon-to-be-released remaster of the original Kingdoms of Amalur. Cheekily named "Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning", the remaster makes way to a gaming platform (currently PC and PS4 confirmed) near you as soon as August 18th. THQ Nordic is claiming "improved visuals and refined gameplay." It initially offered a release date of Aug. 11, but it has now been adjusted to Aug. 18. The games' announcement was originally leaked via Microsoft's Store (with accompanying screenshots), and has since been confirmed by THQ Nordic via Twitter.

Steam and THQ Nordic Issue Statements on Metro Exodus Exclusivity on Epic Games Store

We reported yesterday how Metro Exodus unceremoniously left Steam for a year-long exclusivity deal on the Epic Game store, one of many steps that Epic and Tencent are taking to challenge the Goliath of PC gaming storefronts itself. Valve was quick in putting out a rare statement yesterday, which has been updated since to reflect the status of the game on Steam, and it can be seen below verbatim, with THQ Nordic's take on this matter past the break.
Notice: Sales of Metro Exodus have been discontinued on Steam due to a publisher decision to make the game exclusive to another PC store. The developer and publisher have assured us that all prior sales of the game on Steam will be fulfilled on Steam, and Steam owners will be able to access the game and any future updates or DLC through Steam. We think the decision to remove the game is unfair to Steam customers, especially after a long pre-sale period. We apologize to Steam customers that were expecting it to be available for sale through the February 15th release date, but we were only recently informed of the decision and given limited time to let everyone know.

THQ Nordic Announces Acquisition of IP to "Alone in the Dark", "Act of War" Franchises

THQ Nordic today announced they had acquired rights to two different IPs from Atari Europe SAS. The agreement extends to both the Alone in the Dark and Act of War franchises - of which the first is the most well-known.

Alone in the Dark, with its survival horror archetype, saw early instalments of the series based on the writings of master horror storyteller H. P. Lovecraft. Later entries in the series drew inspiration from other sources including voodoo, the Wild West, and the works of H. R. Giger. Act of War, though, is a different beast: a story-driven, real-time strategy game developed by Eugen Systems that featured a fine-grained story penned by NYT bestselling author Dale Brown. Daily operations in the two newly-acquired franchises (sales and distribution, evaluation of sequels & new content etc.) will be done via THQ Nordic GmbH in Vienna, Austria. Here's hoping this eventually leads to a new lease of life for these currently estranged franchises (and the real time strategy genre in itself).

THQ Nordic acquires the "Kingdoms of Amalur" IP

THQ Nordic today announced they had acquired the IP for Kingdoms of Amalur, the huge, ambitious RPG that launched back in 2012. Developed by 38 Studios and the adequately named Big Huge Games, Kingdoms of Amalur> Reckoning launched to a good public and critic reception (albeit slightly polarizing in the extreme), which wasn't really that unexpected - renowned fantasy writer R. A. Salvatore created the in-game story and lore, for one, and Todd McFarlane was responsible for the art department.

However, the game didn't go on to be the commercial success it needed to be (perhaps because of it threading genre conventions all too well, particularly in the side quest portion of the game), and 38 Studios eventually filed for bankruptcy. The world and lore of Kingdoms of Amalur was already quite substantial to begin with, and a sequel was in the works and in pre-production; and that's ostensibly all part of the new IP acquisition by THQ Nordic. There's something about the overall Kingdoms of Amalur aesthetic and gameplay that resonates with THQ Nordic's own Darksiders, so it seems to be a good fit for the company. Here's to something new actually flourishing from the ashes of this acquisition.
