Thermaltake Intros Smart BX1 RGB Series Power Supplies

Thermaltake today introduced the Smart BX1 RGB series mid-range power supplies (PSUs). Available in 550W, 650W, and 750W variants, these PSUs bring some form of RGB LED bling to a mainstream feature-set. The star-attraction here is the 140 mm hydraulic bearing fan that's studded with ten 7-color LEDs. An internal lighting controller cycles between 7 colors, combination presets, lighting patterns, and light-off, at the push of a button near the AC receptacle (though sufficiently far from the main AC switch).

Under the hood, you get a single +12V rail design with 80 Plus Bronze efficiency, active PFC, an advertised ripple noise of <80 mV, and most common electrical protections, such as over/under-voltage, overload, overheat, and short-circuit. All three variants have enough juice and straws for a gaming PC build with 2-3 graphics cards. The 550W and 650W variants offer two 6+2 pin PCIe and six SATA power; while the 750W variant offers four PCIe with eight SATA power. All cables are fixed and flat (ribbon-type). Backed by a 5-year warranty, the Smart BX1 RGB series models are priced between $60 and $100.

CaseLabs Withers Away After Losing PR Battle to Thermaltake

Premium aluminium case maker CaseLabs made a splash in 2015 when it accused Thermaltake of stealing many of its case designs to make "cheap Asian knock-offs." When faced with the prospect of a legal challenge by the much larger Thermaltake, CaseLabs this July withdrew its comments and publicly apologized to Thermaltake for it. Things didn't look up for the company after that. A deadly cocktail of the US-China trade-war, and the default of a large commercial loan account hit the company "at the worst possible time," it said in a statement. Failure to secure additional capital to stay afloat was the last straw.

Apparently, the import tariffs on a wide range of products manufactured in China raised prices for CaseLabs by "almost 80 percent," which cut deeply into the company's margins. The company has since stopped accepting orders, thanked its over 20,000 customers, and promised to fulfill as many of the pending orders as possible, while cautioning that it won't be able to fulfill all of them.

The full CaseLabs statement follows.

Thermaltake Intros Engine 17 "All Metal" Low-profile CPU Cooler

Back in 2011, a team of engineers with the Sandia National Laboratories in New Mexico, proposed an audacious new chip air-cooling concept called simply the Sandia CPU cooler. Its design involved a chunky metallic fan not just ventilating the cooler, but also dissipating heat by itself, conveyed through a thin layer of conductive lubricant between the fan and the static heatsink below it. The concept itself never made it to commercial production, but Thermaltake brought something closely resembling it to the market in 2016, with the Engine 27. The company is giving this cooler an even smaller sibling, with the new Engine 17. The number in the model name refers to its Z-height of just 17 mm, making it comfortable for 1U builds.

Besides its reduced Z-height, the design is practically unchanged from the Engine 27 - a round, nickel-plated copper base-plate draws heat from the CPU, which is mated with a 60 mm diameter metallic fan that not just dissipates heat by itself, but also passes air through a ring of aluminium fin channels projecting radially. The reduced height means that this cooler can only handle thermal loads of up to 35W TDP. It only supports Intel LGA115x sockets. Despite its weight, the fan spins between 1,500 to 2,500 RPM, pushing about 9 CFM of air, with a noise output ranging between 11 to 23 dBA. Measuring 91.5 mm x 91.5 mm x 17 mm, it weighs 205 g. The company didn't reveal pricing.
