Lenovo Announces ThinkPad Z Series Laptops

Lenovo is thrilled to announce a new series of ThinkPad laptops featuring stunning progressive designs that break the mold and introduce new colors and materials for our premium business laptop portfolio. The all-new ThinkPad Z13 and Z16 embark on a contemporary design philosophy targeting a different business user audience. The new striking design reflects changing attitudes towards technology, its impact on the environment and the origins of raw components. Not only is the design meant to provide individualistic premium color accents such as bronze and arctic grey, but it also features more sustainable materials such as recycled aluminium, or recycled black vegan leather. Sustainability extends to the packaging which is made from 100% recyclable and compostable bamboo and sugarcane, and the AC power adapter uses 90% Post-Consumer Content (PCC).

Lenovo ThinkBook Plus with Integrated Tablet Leaks Alongside ThinkPad Z

Although CES 2022 might not be what was initially expected for Lenovo, the company might be revealing several new notebook models, albeit in a more digital fashion than the company had initially planned, due to it pulling out from physically exhibiting at the show. Pictures of at least three upcoming models have leaked courtesy of @Evleaks and all three are intriguing in their own right, as they all bring something new to the table, or should that be lap?

First up we have the 17-inch ThinkBook Plus, which has an integrated tablet on the right hand side of the keyboard, plus a stylus that works with the tablet. Sadly the stylus looks rather "cheap" for a lack of a better word, especially compared to other recent devices with a stylus, so hopefully some third party options will be usable. It appears as if the tablet section can be used for normal touch input as well, based on the leaked pictures. No tech specs were provided, but we can spot what appears to be a combined finger print and power button just above the keyboard and around the back is an HDMI port, two USB type-A ports and a USB-C port, plus what appears to be a power socket and another USB-C port on the left side of the notebook.

Lenovo Brings Linux Certification to ThinkPad and ThinkStation Workstation Portfolio

More than 250 million computers are sold each year and NetMarketShare reports that 2.87 percent - roughly 7.2 million users - are using those computers to run Linux. Once thought of as a niche IT crowd, this user base of data scientists, developers, application engineers, scientists and more is growing - stepping into sought-after roles across multiple industries and becoming essential within their companies. Now, I'm excited to share Lenovo is moving to certify the full workstation portfolio for top Linux distributions from Ubuntu and Red Hat - every model, every configuration.

While many users prefer to customize their own machines - either on hardware without an OS or by wiping an existing client OS, then configuring and installing Linux - this can raise uncertainty with system stability, restricted performance, compatibility, end-user productivity and even IT support for devices. Now that these users are making their way out of the proverbial shadows and onto the enterprise floor, the demand is high for an out-of-the-box solution that removes the barrier for deployment of enterprise-grade hardware within a Linux software ecosystem.

Lenovo ThinkPad TrackPoint Keyboard II Stars Selling

For those addicted to the track-point on their ThinkPad notebook, and can't get themselves to use a mouse on their desktops, Lenovo rolled out the ThinkPad TrackPoint Keyboard II back in January 2020, which started selling for USD $85.99. This is a wireless+wired keyboard that's laid out exactly like a ThinkPad T-series notebook's keyboard, with a track-point in the middle, and its two buttons. and a typical 13-inch class notebook's 83-key layout, plus three buttons for the track-point. There are three ways to connect this keyboard to your computer/notebook/tablet: over Bluetooth, over 2.4 GHz RF, using the included dongle, and plugging it directly with the included USB-C to USB-A cable, which charges its battery, as well as lets you use the keyboard as a USB-HID. The keyboard uses the same scissor-type switches found on ThinkPads, with Chicklet keycaps. It measures 305.5 mm x 164 mm x 13.7 (WxDxH).

Intel Core i9-10885H is an i9-10980HK that Trades OC Capability for vPro

Intel is reportedly giving finishing touches to a new performance-segment notebook processor positioned between the Core i7-10875H and the flagship Core i9-10980HK, called the Core i9-10885H. Based on the "Comet Lake-H" silicon, this 8-core/16-thread processor has identical clock speeds to the i9-10980HK, but lacks overclocking capabilities. With its default 45 W TDP configured, the processor ticks at 2.40 GHz nominal, with up to 5.30 GHz boost - a 200 MHz speed-bump over the i7-10875H.

Apparently, the chip also features vPro capability, making it fit for commercial-segment notebooks such as the Dell Latitude and Lenovo ThinkPad T-series. Among the other Intel mobile processors with vPro capability are the new Xeon W-10855M 6-core/12-thread and W-10885M 8-core/16-thread processors; and the 15 W category i7-10810U 6-core/12-thread; and i7-10610U i5-10310U 4-core/8-thread processors. These processors are likely to formally launch on May 13.

Lenovo to Ship ThinkPad Laptops with Fedora 32 Workstation Pre-installed

Lenovo's ageless ThinkPad line of business laptops have been known to be fiercely Wintel, but the company is diversifying both its hardware- and software- feature-sets, beginning with AMD "Picasso" powered ThinkPad T-series models, and now a big announcement along the sidelines of the Red Hat Summit - ThinkPads with Fedora 32 Workstation operating system pre-installed.

A new line of upcoming ThinkPads will ship with Fedora 32 Workstation pre-installed, along with preparation for the end-user to install proprietary software, such as NVIDIA GeForce official drivers, at first startup. Out of the box, the ThinkPads will include open-source software, pointing to OSS repositories. Fedora is an open-source (out of the box) free-software derived from Red Hat Enterprise Linux, and includes a flavor optimized for desktops, notebooks, and workstations, Fedora Workstation. Since the announcement comes from the Fedora team, we don't have hardware specifications of the ThinkPads, yet.
A video presentation by the Fedora Project follows.

Intel Zooms in on "Lakefield" Foveros Package

The fingernail-size Intel chip with Foveros technology is a first-of-its kind. With Foveros, processors are built in a totally new way: not with the various IPs spread out flat in two dimensions, but with them stacked in three dimensions. Think of a chip designed as a layer cake (a 1-millimeter-thick layer cake) versus a chip with a more-traditional pancake-like design. Intel's Foveros advanced packaging technology allows Intel to "mix and match" technology IP blocks with various memory and I/O elements - all in a small physical package for significantly reduced board size. The first product designed this way is "Lakefield," the Intel Core processor with Intel hybrid technology.

Industry analyst firm The Linley Group recently named Intel's Foveros 3D-stacking technology as "Best Technology" in its 2019 Analysts' Choice Awards. "Our awards program not only recognizes excellence in chip design and innovation, but also acknowledges the products that our analysts believe will have an impact on future designs," said Linley Gwennap, of The Linley Group.

Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Fold is a Force Multiplier for Road Warriors at CES 2020

The ThinkPad brand from Lenovo has always represented serious business on the move, right from its IBM origins. At CES 2020, the company unveiled what is possibly the best foldable PC design we've seen till date, the ThinkPad X1 Fold. The X1 Fold is a 13.3-inch tablet that folds perfectly along the middle to either a book-like orientation, or as a laptop, in which the top half becomes the display, and the bottom half your keyboard of whichever possible layout. If a touchscreen keyboard doesn't appeal to you, you can dock an accessory that has a physical keyboard and trackpad.

Under the hood of the X1 Fold is an Intel "Lakefield" Hybrid x86 SoC that combines high-performance and high-efficiency x86 cores and dynamically allots workload to them while power-gating on the fly (a la ARM big.LITTLE). When it comes out mid-2020 (likely a Computex 2020 launch), the ThinkPad X1 Fold will be driven by Windows 10X, a new operating system Microsoft is designing specifically for dual-screen mobile computing devices. The Flex 5G is Lenovo's first business notebook with an integrated 5G modem (in addition to Wi-Fi 6), so you can enjoy high-speed mobile Internet on the move. Lastly, we spotted the Lenovo Ducati notebook, a co-branded product of the company's MotoGP team sponsorship.

Lenovo Recalls ThinkPad X1 Carbon Laptops Due to Fire Hazard

Lenovo has identified a potential issue with their 14-inch ThinkPad X1 Carbon 5th Generation laptops that could pose a serious fire hazard to consumers. The manufacturer has sold around 78,000 units in the United States and 5,500 units in Canada. As of January 31, the company has received a total of three reports of overheating, but none of the incidents occured in the United States and Canada. Fortunately, there were no human injury or property damage. According to Lenovo's investigation, the culprit is an unfastened screw, if left unattended, could damage the laptop's battery causing overheating. The recall includes machine types 20HQ, 20HR, 20K3 or 20K4 that were manufactured from December 2016 through October 2017. Units manufactured on or after November 1, 2017 are not affected.
