New Acer T2 Series Displays Designed to Maximize Touch Benefits of Windows 8

Acer America today is bringing its Acer T2 Series touch displays to customers in the U.S. and Canada. Featuring a premium blend of aesthetics and performance, these slender and elegant monitors include the Acer T232HL with a 23-inch screen and the Acer T272HL with a 27-inch screen. Both displays are Windows 8 compliant, enabling consumers to take advantage of the features in Windows 8 with a 10-point multi-touch screen, whether using a new PC or an old PC upgraded to the new operating system.

The new displays tout edge-to-edge glass in an elegant design that will enhance any room in the home. Supported by an asymmetrical stand, the monitors have an aesthetically-pleasing look. The stand enables users to view images tilted back up to 80 degrees, which is practically flush with the desk for enhancing comfort and ergonomics to make the most of the capacitive-touch capabilities. This tilt feature is especially beneficial for touch-friendly activities like playing games, viewing photo albums and cookbooks as well as Web surfing. The monitors also come with VESA mounts for hanging them on a wall.

Elecom Intros Windows 8-optimized Mice

Elecom Japan announced four new lines (a total of 18 models) of mice optimized for Windows 8. The optimization is a special button, which in combination with movement and other buttons, lets you emulate multi-touch gestures (such as pinching), making it ideal for Windows 8 tablets that convert to desktops with a simple docking/stand. Among the four lines are the M-BL18UB series, the M-BL19DB series, the M-TG08UL series, and the M-TG09DL series (pictured in that order below). The four feature 1600 DPI blue LED sensors, 6 buttons, 2-way scroll-wheels, and ergonomic right-oriented designs. The M-BL18UB and M-TG08UL are wired, while the M-BL19DB and M-TG09DL talk to the host over 2.4 GHz wireless band. The mice are available in red, blue, pink, black, or white variants. They are slated for mid-October.

Microsoft to Acquire Perceptive Pixel Inc.

Microsoft Corp. and Perceptive Pixel Inc. (PPI) today announced that they have entered into a definitive agreement under which Microsoft will acquire PPI, a recognized leader in research, development and production of large-scale, multi-touch display solutions.

"The acquisition of PPI allows us to draw on our complementary strengths, and we're excited to accelerate this market evolution," said Kurt DelBene, president, Office Division for Microsoft. VESA Announces New Mobility DisplayPort Standard

The Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA) today announced the release of the Mobility DisplayPort (MyDP) Standard. MyDP is an extension of the DisplayPort connectivity standard that enables mobile devices to share high-definition video, audio, and 3D content with the broad universe of larger external displays through common, widely adopted connectors. Offering the industry's highest mobile-to-display image resolution, MyDP allows consumers to experience their mobile content in full, uncompressed 1080p (HDTV).

AU Optronics to Exhibit a Diverse Array of Innovative Display Technology at CODE 2012

Samsung Announces 15-inch Series 9 Ultrabook in the UK

Samsung UK has jumped the gun with Ivy Bridge-powered Ultrabooks, and posted the product page of its 15-inch Series 9 Ultrabook. Intel's Core "Ivy Bridge" processors for Ultrabooks won't be official till June. Pictured below is the Series 9 NP900X4C, with a 15-inch screen, that has 1600x900 pixels resolution, and a sleek wedge-shaped design. Under the hood is an Intel Core i5-3317U dual-core processor clocked at 1.70 GHz, with 2.60 GHz Turbo Boost speed, and Intel HD 4000 graphics; Intel HM75 Express chipset, 8 GB of dual-channel DDR3-1600 MHz memory, and a 128 GB SSD.

Connectivity/features include 802.11 b/g/n with WiDi support, Bluetooth 4.0, one USB 2.0 and two USB 3.0 ports, micro-HDMI display output, SD/MMC card-reader, and 1.3 megapixel webcam. The keyboad has backlit illumination, and the tracking device is a large multi-touch clickpad. The Series 9 body is made of an all-aluminum chassis, which could make it light, improve heat dissipation, but also step up its costs. Expect the Series 9 NP900X4C to start selling in June.

Iiyama Releases the ProLite T2234MC Multi-touch Monitor

Iiyama Corp. has just launched the ProLite T2234MC, a 21.5-inch monitor which features an IPS panel and makes use of projective capacitive touch technology to allow for two-finger multi-touch. Designed for 'Interactive Digital Signage, Instore Retail, Kiosks, Gaming and Interactive Presentations', Iiyama's new widescreen LCD also has a native resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels, an 8 ms response time, a 1,000:1 contrast ratio, 225 cd/m2 brightness, 178°/ 178° viewing angles, D-Sub and DVI inputs, and USB connectivity.

The ProLite T2234MC has a recommended price tag of 629 Euro.

Intel Shows off "Letexo" Slider Hybrid-Ultrabook

At IDF Beijing, Intel showed off an almost unique new class of Ultrabook devices which could be sold by various notebook OEMs in the future, codenamed "Letexo". This is a tablet + slider ultrabook, similar in form (albeit larger) to the ASUS EeePad Slider, except that it has an Intel processor inside, and runs Windows 8 (the EeePad Slider was NVIDIA Tegra 2 and Android 3.0 driven). When slid down, Letexo is almost as compact and functional as a tablet PC, with its multi-touch screen, letting you take advantage of Windows Metro UI; when slid up, a keyboard and trackpad are revealed, letting you use it as just another laptop. Perhaps Letexo is intended to be a large-scale effort by Intel to bring about a transition between laptops and tablets, by shaping people's usage patterns towards more touch-based interface.

Gigabyte Unveils the GB-AEGT Gaming All-in-One Barebone

Gigabyte's barebone PC offering is growing still, with the Taiwanese company currently preparing the release of another model, the GB-AEGT All-in-One. Claimed to be gaming-friendly, this new AiO features a 24-inch Full HD (1920 x 1080) LED-backlit display with 2-point multi-touch, an Intel H61 Mini-ITX motherboard, Core i3/i5/i7 (LGA 1155) processor support , and one PCI-Express x16 slot that can handle a dual-slot graphics card.

Gigabyte's barebone also has a 2.5-inch HDD/SSD dock, two DDR3-1333 memory slots (for up to 8 GB of RAM), two Mini PCIe slots, one 3.5-inch drive bay, a slim optical drive slot, a webcam, Gigabit Ethernet, optional WiFi and Bluetooth 2.1, a 4-in-1 card reader, two USB 3.0 ports, and D-Sub and HDMI outputs. The GB-AEGT has not been priced or dated.

PlayStation Vita Sales Reach Over 1.2 Million Units Worldwide

Sony Computer Entertainment Inc, today announced that the sales of the PlayStation Vita (PS Vita) portable entertainment system reached over 1.2 million units worldwide as of February 26, 2012. PS Vita experienced an initial burst of momentum when it launched on December 17, 2011 in Japan followed by Hong Kong, Taiwan and South Korea. Newly launched in North and Latin America, Europe and PAL territories as well as in Singapore on February 22, 2012, sales have exceeded expectations surpassing over 1.2 million units worldwide, firmly establishing PS Vita as the must-have portable entertainment device across the world. Software sales across the globe have surpassed 2.0 million units at both retail and on PlayStation Network.

N-trig and NVIDIA To Bring Improved Pen and Multi-Touch Input to Tablets

N-trig today announced a collaboration with NVIDIA to provide tablets with unparalleled pen and multi-touch performance and functionality. German company TAROX Systems & Services has today introduced a new, business-minded system, a 21.5-inch all-in-one desktop based around an Intel platform. Seen below, the Business 300 AIO measures 53 x 7 x 40.5 cm and features a Full HD (1920 x 1080) multi-touch display, a 3.3 GHz Core i3-2120 processor, integrated graphics, 4 GB of RAM, a 500 GB hard drive, and a DVD writer.

TAROX's machine also has a 1.3-megapixel webcam, a card reader, Gigabit Ethernet, 802.11 b/g/n WiFi, three USB 2.0 ports, and D-Sub and HDMI outputs. The Business 300 AIO runs Windows 7 Professional 64-bit and costs 799 Euro.

Gigabyte Also Unveils the GB-AEDTK All-in-One Barebone

In addition to prepping its overclocked Radeon HD 7970, Gigabyte is currently finishing up yet another all-in-one barebone, the GB-AEDTK featuring an Intel H61 motherboard (it supports LGA 1155 processors), a 21.5-inch 10-point multi-touch display, and a built-in backup battery that will come in handy during a power outage.

Gigabyte's AiO can be equipped with up to 8 GB of RAM (via two SO-DIMMs), and has a 3.5-inch drive bay, a slim optical drive bay, Gigabit Ethernet, two 3W speakers, a 4-in-1 card reader, a Mini PCIe slot, two USB 3.0 ports, and a HDMI output. No word yet on its price tag.
