Value and Conclusion

  • The ACGAM AG6X 61-key English language keyboard costs $35.99 from Amazon.com in the USA as of the date this article was written.
  • Inexpensive and of good value for the money spent
  • A good take on the 60% form factor with multiple language support
  • Doubleshot injected primary and Shift + layered secondary functions
  • Software driver adds useful key assignment, profiles, and macro functionality
  • Extensive on-board lighting and functionality control
  • Outemu Blue mechanical switches were consistent in actuation force and travel
  • Software driver scales poorly with high DPI displays, and the user interface can be improved
  • The Fn + layered functions are not backlit, and the stock keycaps use thin ABS which will show signs of wear and tear sooner rather than later
  • This review sample had some wobble between the keycap and the switch, which is possibly a switch batch issue
  • One-year warranty is short
I was curious about the various other companies that arose in the course of the review, and ACGAM did shed some light on this matter—Shenzhen Semitek Co. Ltd is a factory they cooperate with, and the AG6X is their modified, customized take on the 60% keyboard. This happens quite often and is not really an issue in my books as long as it is a cooperation at work. With this in mind, that price point is all the more impressive considering it has to bring out a profit for multiple entities at this point. When you consider that 60% form factor keyboards available in North America and Europe alike tend to go higher end with full metal cases, which also means price points that are way higher, and even the iKBC Poker 2 with a plastic case costs over twice as much, the AG6X from ACGAM has next to no competition when it comes to value for money.

A 60% form factor keyboard is not for everyone, with people used to the 104/5 key full size keyboard even today. There are ergonomic benefits with less finger travel, and key assignment options often end up being enough to get users to go with such keyboards with a highly customized, tuned little input peripheral. ACGAM makes this a more amenable process by offering layers with keycaps that have printed legends for the base, Shift, and Fn layers, which, combined with the logical use of pre-programmed layer assignments, resulted in a quicker switch to this keyboard than I had with a few others in this form factor or near-about. The onboard controls for functionality and lighting are a plus, as is the actual backlighting in itself. Outemu Blue switches are not new to me, and they continue to be impressive in their tactile, clicky feedback and consistent actuation even compared to the Cherry MX Blue they are based on.

But these switches were not perfect, however. Perhaps it is a batch issue, as ACGAM themselves said they found no such issue and my previous experience with these switches agrees with them, but the switches on this unit expressed noticeable wobble, which meant the keycaps were ultimately going to be off a few degrees in action if you hit them off-center. I confirmed the keycaps were not to blame here either with a different keyboard and other switches. So it is likely you may not have this issue, but you should still be aware. The bigger issue here, however, is that the driver needs to be improved to scale with high DPI displays. It was near impossible to view the options at 4K, and that is not a good thing when you are trying to make a name for yourself in an extremely niche market.

Overall, the plus point highly outweigh the cons, and that price point alone sells it for those looking for a smaller keyboard. The one-year warranty could definitely be improved, but knowing you can buy two (or even three) of these and save change compared to the more popular options is enough to give this a recommendation.
