Akasa Power Max 1000W Review

Value and Conclusion

  • Akasa did not decide on a final street price yet, but it should be in the neighbourhood of about $240.
  • High efficiency
  • Quiet
  • Quad PCI-E power
  • Very long cables
  • 8-Pin connectors for new VGA cards
  • Lots of connectors
  • Cables sleeved
  • Not modular
  • Expensive
  • Very long cables (may be hard to hide)
Akasa's new PowerMax 1000W power supply offers plenty of power for even the most demanding systems. In our testing we saw good voltage stability and excellent efficiency of over 82%. The included cables are extremely long, some over 1m. This makes the PSU a great choice for big cases where you need to connect a large amount of peripherals. Unlike many other 1000W power supplies the case size of the Akasa PowerMax 1000W follows the ATX specification, so it will fit any case.
Please note that Akasa uses two 12V rails with 35 Amps each, unlike many manufacturers which use four rails at 18A for example. With such an 18A setup you are limited to a power draw of 216W per rail. If you had a highly overclocked video card you could reach that limit. However, since Akasa included two VGA connectors on one cable you are limited to 35 Amps (=420 W) per cable, so each connector has 17.5A for its use.
The amount of connectors included is great, you will even find two of the new PCI-Express 8 pin power connectors, in addition to two 6-pin ones. Unfortunately Akasa did not include a modularity feature with their power supply, so you will have to hide the cables if you want your case to have a clean look on the inside as well. We found the Akasa Power Max 1000 to be a bit more noisy than other 1000W power supplies, but this is probably due to the fact that its smaller case has a higher heat density.
