Radeon HD 5870 Power Design
Here is when you dissemble the accelerator. The long black PCB sports some of the best VRM circuitry ever designed. Here are volt-mod expert Largon's observations on the VRM design laid out:
- 4 "digital" vGPU phases with Volterra VT1157SF (never seen these before...), option for a 5th vGPU phase
- new type of vGPU inductor package
- 1 "digital" uncore (GDDR5 IMC?) phase with Volterra VT1157SF, option for a 2nd
- 1+1 "digital" GDDR5 vDD+vDDQ phases with Volterra VT242WF
- 2× Volterra VT1165MF controllers (vGPU & uncore)
- the card is SOFTMOD COMPLIANT, YAY!
- 2×6pin (PCI-E power connectors), option for 6pin+8pin - not that it matters, though
With these AMD promises to provide some of the best power consumption figures for this category. With a company-rated max board power of 188W and idle power consumption as low as 27W. What's more, the design allows software voltage control, reducing the need for manual warranty-voiding voltage modifications.
