Ripple Measurements

You will see the ripple levels we measured on the EDG650's rails in the following table. The limits are, according to the ATX specification, 120 mV (+12V) and 50 mV (5V, 3.3V, and 5VSB).

Ripple suppression was very good overall; however, we would like to see less than 25 mV on the 5V rail. Speaking of the latter, the same scenario as with the XFX XTR-650 unit based on the same platform took place, but in a more pronounced way: Ripple on 5V was low with up to the 80% load, but multiplied fivefold with only an additional 10%! The same rail produced similar results in the Cross Loads test under normal operating temperatures, so the high ambient obviously isn't the culprit. Seasonic should look into the issue, although such ripple levels only occur with 8.5 A or more, a pretty high load for a minor rail.

Ripple at Full Load

You can see the AC ripple and noise the main rails registered (+12V, 5V, 3.3V, and 5VSB) in the following oscilloscope screenshots. The bigger the fluctuations on the oscilloscope's screen, the bigger the ripple/noise. We set 0.01 V/Div (each vertical division/box equals 0.01 V) as the standard for all measurements.
