The AQIRYS Alnair comes with a compact wireless dongle with a USB-C port. The dongle establishes a 2.4 GHz wireless radio connection with the headset, which is rock-stable at all times and offers plenty of range as well. I moved around my home without ever losing connectivity to the receiver, which came in handy when I wanted to keep talking to my teammates while grabbing a snack from the fridge.
There are two main ways of using the aforementioned wireless dongle. You can plug it into the supplied USB Type-A to USB-C extension cable and use the AQIRYS Alnair on your PC or PlayStation 4/5. Of course, if your PC has a USB-C port, the USB Type-A adapter isn't needed – you can just plug it in directly. Alternatively, you can plug the dongle into a USB-C port of your mobile device of choice, such as your smartphone or the Nintendo Switch. I tested this on several Android phones, and it worked flawlessly. As soon as I plugged the dongle in, a headset icon would appear next to the battery icon, and I was instantly able to listen to sounds from my phone, as well as use the microphone to communicate with my friends through the mobile version of Discord, Skype, or any other VoIP app.
The AQIRYS Alnair also supports Bluetooth 5.0 connectivity, which enables an easy connection to mobile devices. The only supported Bluetooth audio codec is SBC, which is hardly ideal either in terms of latency, but there are no noticeable audio synchronization issues when watching YouTube or Netflix videos. Some slight lag can be felt when playing mobile games – not high enough to bother you in single-player titles, although high enough to throw you off your game in multiplayer and rhythm titles, where perfect timing is everything. This is one of the reasons why it's so good that you can connect the 2.4 GHz wireless dongle to your mobile device; by doing so, wireless latencies are no longer an issue. With that in mind, for more demanding mobile gaming, always opt for the supplied Wi-Fi dongle.
The headset also supports simultaneous Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, which is immensely practical in everyday usage. You can have it connected to your PC and smartphone at the same time and answer phone calls without interrupting PC connectivity. Or you can play a multiplayer game on your console while chatting with your mates on Discord, installed on your phone. Nice!
Battery Life
According to official specifications, the AQIRYS Alnair can offer up to 50 hours of wireless operation when using the 2.4 GHz wireless connection, assuming that the volume is adjusted to 50% and both ANC and RGB lighting system are off. Aside from those, we also have to take into account the simultaneous Bluetooth connection, which is another factor in the overall battery life equation. Depending on all these, you can be looking at anything from 25 to 50 hours of battery life from the AQIRYS Alnair. Either way, the battery has more than enough juice to last you for several days, regardless of your particular use case.
As for the power-saving features of the AQIRYS Alnair, the headset enters a stand-by mode after 10 minutes of inactivity but keeps the wireless connection active. Only when removed from the range of the wireless sources for longer than five minutes does it completely turn off. In other words, if you leave it on your table and walk away, it will enter stand-by, but won't turn off its RGB lighting system, which isn't an optimal way to preserve battery life. It would be better if it simply turned off when nothing's playing through it in a set amount of time (30 minutes, for example).
The battery is charged through a USB-C port found on the right ear cup. A full charge lasts around three hours. There's no fast charging support.
