AVerMedia has just launched the CamStream 4K (BU113G2), a portable video capture card designed specifically for DSLR, mirrorless, and action cameras, as well as camcorders. It's a direct competitor to the popular Elgato Cam Link 4K, offering the same plug-and-play functionality but with a few added features. These include support for uncompressed RGB24 color format at 1080p60, HDR input support at 4K60, 1440p144, and 1080p240, as well as a practical 1/4" cold shoe mount. All of this comes with a slightly higher $120 price tag, signaling that AVerMedia isn't aiming to be the budget option in this segment, but rather the best-performing one.
If it isn't obvious, the purpose of the CamStream 4K is to turn your camera into a high-performance recording and streaming device. The capture card receives video and audio signals from the camera via its HDMI 2.0 input, and delivers them to a Windows/macOS or Android/iPadOS device through a 5 Gbps USB connection. This same USB port also powers the CamStream 4K, reducing cable clutter and simplifying its overall usability. What you do with the video and audio once it's delivered to your device is entirely up to you. Your DSLR or mirrorless camera effectively becomes a souped-up webcam, ready for direct recording, livestreaming, video conferencing, or anything in between.
