Value & Conclusion

  • The be quiet! Dark Base Pro 900 currently sells for around €200-€210 incl. taxes or US$249 excl. them. For those who do not need the Qi charger or glass side panel, you may go for the Dark Base 900 for €150-€160 or US$199 respectively. Looks like the chassis is a bit more expensive in the USA, or priced quite affordably in the EU.

  • Motherboard tray may be flipped upside down
  • Qi Charger embedded in the top
  • Fan controller included
  • Fan PCB can control PWM fans
  • LED on/off switch
  • Mounting brackets for liquid cooling included
  • LED light strip part of the package
  • Seven individual metal hard-drive trays for seven 3.5" or 14 2.5" drives
  • Door may be set to swing open in either direction
  • Easily removable dust filters in front and bottom of chassis
  • External drive bay covers easily removable
  • Three 140 mm retail-grade SilentWings 3 fans included
  • Sound dampening and encapsulation in all areas
  • Orange power LED
  • Glass side panel
  • Available in three colors
  • Noticeably more expensive in the US (but still not bad)
  • Fan or radiator placement on floor will severely limit PSU length
  • Reversing the internal layout is quite complicated
  • Solid top and floor panels mean that airflow is a bit more restrictive
  • Rubber rings for glass panel could be a bit thicker and less fragile
The be quiet! Dark Base Pro 900 represents the company's high-end entry into the chassis market. It has been on the market for a while, and we are fortunate enough to review it. Even though it has been out for a bit, the engineering that has gone into it is one of the most intricate I have seen in recent times.

be quiet! has managed to make the case look traditional and understated on the outside - a facet common to be quiet! designs - but has poured considerable time and resources into the interior feature set and the Dark Base Pro 900's compatibility.

However, even on the outside, the case already hints at its well-thought-out interior elements, starting with the clean design and front cover. The door, which hides the drive bay and retail-grade 140 mm fans, can be set to swing open in either direction, while the drive bay covers are extremely easy to remove should you want to use the drive bays.

But the interior is where the magic happens. be quiet! has steered clear of using plastic bits and pieces, but instead offers individual metal drive bays for massive storage capability and even designed the interior in a way that defies a traditional mass market approach so that you have the ability to go all out when it comes to liquid cooling. The Dark Base Pro 900 is not simply capable of holding all-in-one cooling units. This case will shine if filled with individual, custom-made liquid-cooling loops using multiple thick radiators. But even those who simply want potent air cooling will find three 140 mm retail SilentWings 3 fans inside and the ability to add a slew more to push even more air through the system. To keep things quiet, be quiet! has included a fan controller with enough expandability to adjust the speed of a fully filled system.

But things do not end there. Due to the modular approach, you could take advantage of simply using the external motherboard tray during the assembly process, or you could step it up when it comes to radiator choice by going as far as to reverse the board for an added thermal benefit and even more flexibility.

As a cherry on top, the Pro version includes an LED strip to illuminate that potent hardware setup through the big glass side panel and even embeds a Qi charger in the top. Offering all that at a price point of €200-€210 including taxes is awesome, but even at US$249 excl. taxes, I would say you are getting quite the good bang for your buck. Those who do not require the glass panel, LED strip, or Qi charger can save €50, or US$50, by just going for one of the Dark Base 900 variants.
