CM Storm Scout 2 Advanced Review

Value & Conclusion

  • The CM Storm Scout 2 Advanced will set you back around 80 euros including taxes or 104 U.S. dollars excluding taxes. While this may be a big difference in price, Newegg is offering a mail-in rebate that brings the price down to 89.99 U.S. dollars excluding taxes.
  • Very good construction
  • Three fans included
  • Extremely comfortable, sturdy, and steel-reinforced handle
  • Extruded sides for additional space
  • LED on/off switch
  • Space for up to seven other fans
  • Anti-theft system for gaming peripherals
  • 3.5" to 2 x 2.5" HDD bay adapter included
  • HDD rails for easy installation
  • Screw-less system for ODD bays
  • Nicely hidden I/O panel in top
  • Gunmetal, black, and white color option
  • No dust filter on some intake-fan locations
  • No fan controller included
  • Compact dimensions--some CPU coolers may be too high
  • No external 3.5" bay
  • ODD-locking mechanism does not hold very well
The CM Storm Scout 2 non-Advanced came out at the 99 U.S dollar/89 euro mark. It has since then dropped in price, giving Cooler Master/CM Storm the ability to offer the Scout 2 Advanced for less than 80 euros, which makes it a much more interesting buy. It is a different story in the US as the basic variant sells for 89 U.S. dollars excluding taxes while the Advanced still clocks in at above 100 U.S. dollars at Newegg. So pricing is not quite on par there yet. Our first sample, the gunmetal grey version, only came with a single 120 mm fan in the back, but the Advanced series is equipped with a total of three. Cooler Master has chosen to offer two version of the chassis, with the "Advanced" variant including two additional cooling units for a 15-20 euro premium. That said, the CM Storm Scout 2 is actually a really good buy for the price! It offers excellent construction quality, an engineered handle, and a flawless paint job. Users will also get some good use out of the LED on/off switch as the Advanced has two LED fans attached to it. All the usual features, like the extruded side panels, detachable side wall of the hard-drive bay, and removable top cover, are there, just like in the non-Advanced version, but the interior is still quite simple. However, all of this can now be had for less than the original Scout 2 when it hit retail. Pretty cool, Cooler Master, pretty cool.

While the non-Advanced version may not be the best buy unless you really want the portability, I do suggest paying the slight price premium to grab the fully featured variant, especially as it is also available in black or white.
