Value and Conclusion

  • The Corsair HX850 retails for $199.99.
  • Delivered full power at 50°C
  • High efficiency
  • Excellent ripple suppression
  • Lots of connectors
  • Silent operation at normal operating temperatures
  • Fanless operation at low loads/ambient
  • Very low consumption in standby mode
  • 7 year warranty
  • Stiff price which affects the price/performance ratio
To wind up, I believe that the new HX850 carries on the tradition of its predecessor since it features excellent performance and more specific high efficiency throughout all load ranges, resilience to high operating temperatures, excellent ripple suppression, and very good performance at dynamic loads. On top of that, it features a silent operation, at least at normal ambient temperature and also has the ability to go fanless at low operating temperatures and loads. In other words, the thermally controlled fan is engaged only when needed, a feature that, to the best of our knowledge, Seasonic exploited first in its X series units and that has since become an instant hit.

To conclude, the new HX850 is an excellent unit which enjoys great support from Corsair through its seven year warranty. If you need a similar-capacity PSU and you have enough money to invest - since the purchase of a PSU is actually an investment for many reasons - then you should seriously consider it. Nevertheless, at this price range, you will find many other interesting alternatives with equally high performance (e.g., the excellent Corsair AX850 is currently sold for 10 bucks less at Newegg). In my opinion, Corsair should lower the price of the new HX850 a little bit, to make it much more competitive.
