Customizing LETSHUOER EJ07M and Closer Examination

Regardless of whether you are getting CIEMs that are simply customized universal fit version or going with a custom fit too, you need to now decide on the design of the CIEMs. This is the fun part as you ponder over the various options available, look at photos previous CIEMs manufactured by the company to see how the renders come off in real life, and eventually finalize the order. The customization options vary from company to company, with LETSHUOER having a dedicated CIEM page on its website that outlines the steps towards obtaining your own LETSHUOER CIEM. The company has face plates and 24 shell colors/finishes available, and I definitely feel that the image provided needs to be higher in resolution to allow for potential customers to better appreciate these options. The shells at least are easy enough to decide upon given there are translucent and opaque versions but I had to then go to this Pinterest album to see how various combinations used in past works look in front of the camera.

LETSHUOER also allows you to add in custom artwork and logos if they are able to reproduce it, but ultimately I was drawn to the specific combination of O-010 opaque black shells and C-009 gear pieces on black background face plates. I have always been a massive fan of anything mechanical to where I have multiple mechanical watches, including one with a Tourbillon mechanism, and would have an automaton in my place if I had the room to tinker with it. It was an obvious choice for me and I also requested there be no logos anywhere, to keep things clean. LETSHUOER were kind enough to agree on this and we ended up with only the serial numbers on the side of the shells. The order sheet confirms all these details that you then agree to, pay for, before waiting for a few weeks as they go about with the order. LETSHUOER is also one of very few companies that allows you to tweak the tuning of the IEMs slightly at this stage. Say, for example, you liked the frequency response of the EJ07M but wanted maybe slightly more bass or more/less ear gain then you can let the company know and they would aim to achieve this for your CIEMs to be even more custom than typical.

Some companies—especially those whose CIEMs are priced in the 4-figure range—will send over some blank shells during the production stage for you to test for fit. This is a nice move from the customer's point of view but not one offered by LETSHUOER, aiming to keep things priced low. As such I had a ~4-week wait period before the package arrived. It was obvious that these are using the exact same packaging as used on the EJ07M UIEMs as seen here. Indeed, you even get ear tips that are useless with these CIEMs but I suppose having more tips is never a bad thing. I'd suggest reading my EJ07M review to know more about the unboxing experience, the various accessories, and the cable itself.

Given the IEMs ship without any cable attached, the first thing I did was marvel at them and then try then on in my ears. The right side fit perfectly like a glove but the left side had too thick an ear canal section to where it wasn't comfortable. Comparisons next to my physical ear impressions also showed it was a tiny thing but a dealbreaker in the current stage. Unfortunately things like this can happen given the various factors in play and LETSHUOER suggested going for a re-shelling at their expense whereby I had to now ship back the shells and my physical impressions too so they could see what went wrong. This is where the COVID outbreak in Shanghai played a big role with my parcel ending up stuck there for a long time before finally making its way to the company whereby they re-shelled the left side and shipped it all back to me.

At last I had my custom EJ07M set and I have to say all the time and resources spent were well worth it. Not only did both sides now fit very well but also I have to hand it to LETSHUOER for the finish applied to the face plate and shells. The gear pieces come off floating in a black void with the brass sections catching light as seen above. The face plate is also glued onto the shells but you'd be hard pressed to identify where exactly, given the hand polish applied that makes for a seamless unibody-style appearance. This elevates the EJ07M CIEMs beyond its price point and I am plenty pleased, to say the least. The shells have flush-mounted 2-pin cable connectors on the side and the serial numbers are indeed marked on the side in blue/red to also indicate the left and right channels respectively. Otherwise we are left with a wide nozzle that fits into the ear canal directly and gives us a closer look at the inner tubes leading from the drivers.

Here we can see my EJ07M CIEMs next to the review sample of the EJ07M UIEMs and the size disparity is obvious enough. The UIEMs do have the benefit of a smaller size, so most users should still be fine with the fit and comfort there, but that's nothing compared to the first time you get CIEMs inside your ears. Note also that the CIEMs don't have the metal mesh filter on the end of the nozzle, so are more susceptible to dust and ear wax. As such you would want to clean them after each use—use the provided microfiber cloth in the box to wipe down the shells, it's just a matter of a few seconds.

At this point I was ready to plug the cable in and get listening. Carefully identify the matching channels and orient the ear hooks to go around your ear naturally when connected to the IEMs. Doing so is straightforward, since you just push the male ends into the female ones on the IEMs and then simply connect to the source using the right-angled 3.5 mm TRS connector on the other end of the cable, assuming you went with the same cable as mine.
