Pairing and Customization

Make sure you have the Edifier WH950NB fully charged and ready to go, it takes ~1.5-2 hours off the Type-C cable from 0-100% depending on your USB source. Turning on the headphones is simple enough in that you just press the middle button for six seconds from power off to both turn it on and initiate pairing—powering on takes two of those seconds. If you have a compatible Android device then Google Fast Pair will kick in and associate the WH950NB to your Android account. You can also manually pair it as usual and don't be alarmed to see the base SBC codec used initially as there is a setting in the app you can use to turn on LDAC mode. This does mean Edifier went with the lower bitrate codec for battery savings and most customers may not even realize or care about it. You can also pair the WH950NB to two devices at the same time although it will get input from only one as usual, and it worked flawlessly in my testing when using it both with my phone and laptop.

Edifier mentions its Connect mobile app multiple times in the product packaging and manual, and there is even a page dedicated to it on the company website. The Edifier Connect app is available on both Android and iOS platforms, and it comes with mostly negative reviews on Android, owing to connectivity issues and bugs that users have experienced with other Edifier products but mostly positive reviews on the iOS side. For what it's worth I agree with some of the UI complaints pointed out by some, but I did not experience any bugs and thought the overall experience was a positive one and well worth the time spent trying the various tweaks and settings provided here. With the WH950NB already paired to your phone, the app should automatically detect it and also create a shortcut menu that can be accessed by pulling down from the top. The first thing I did here was head to the settings menu and enable LDAC!

Interestingly, you also need to enable the dual device connection via the app. I am not convinced holding two important features behind the app is a good way to go! The other useful settings options include changing what the mode button does, increasing or decreasing the volume of the sound prompts that the headphones have, factory reset, Bluetooth pairing and re-pairing, and a very cool feature called Safe Volume which limits the output of the headphones to a max of 85 dB. This is a great way for you to know your ears are safe throughout and also whether or not you typically listen at higher, potentially dangerous volumes. There's also a shutdown timer for the headphones to preserve battery life.

The home page allows you to easily choose between the primary operating modes. By default, the WH950NB has "Noise Cancellation Off," "High Noise Cancellation," and "Ambient Sound" you can toggle through via the mode button. We saw before how the noise cancellation mode can be changed to "Low Noise Cancellation" or "Wind Reduction" in the settings menu too. Swiping to the right now allows you to try a few different EQ modes with "Classic" pre-selected and "Dynamic" as well as "Customized" on offer. The latter option is where you have custom EQ on offer, and actual parametric EQ at that! It's still only a 4-band EQ but my eyes went wide open when I saw the Q-Factor available to choose from 1.0 to 1.9 as well as gain from -9 dB to +3 dB. This is exactly how I'd do it too in that reducing the problem areas is easier than increasing the others as you don't have to worry about a negative preamp gain this way. I do wish more frequency bands were available or even customizable frequencies but, as you will see, these four do handle the issues I had with the tonality in the first place so the custom EQ feature here is quite possibly the single biggest feature in the app you need to play with. You can save and export/import/share the EQ files too, which is nice. There are also three sound modes, and these are saved on the device too, for further EQ presets to choose from, see whether you like these or not with music mode being the default applied.
