Etymotic proves that the ER4 line of products is far from retirement with the ER4 XR. It is what a lot of fans of the ER4S have been looking for ever since its release 25 years ago. The nudged-up bass response makes the ER4 XR much more engaging to listen to with contemporary music, and it is arguably the more natural-tuned for a set of in-ears. The treble is as always insanely good. You get all the details exactly the way they were intended, without any compromise in the upper midrange, just as the elevated bass does not color the midrange or mask lower midrange details. The XR is the ER4 for the masses. The slender cylindrical design just works across so many ear shapes and sizes despite being so simple.

Value & Conclusion

  • The Etymotic ER4 SR is available online for $349.
  • Flat frequency response
  • Detail level throughout
  • Possibly the best treble response of any in-ear
  • Best-in-class noise attenuation
  • Great bass extension
  • Price
  • Tuning not for everyone
  • Deep fit not for everyone
  • Long cable
Etymotic's quest for neutral is evident with the ER4 SR. As the name might imply, this is the direct follower of the ER4S, which also has a very similar frequency response. The SR is probably the new king of analytical sound. The dialed down bass and great extension in both ends makes it ideal for anyone who wants the best in neutral sound.

If you were a fan of the original ER4S, this is the model to go for, no doubt. On some tracks, the SR clearly pulls ahead due to the lower bass response, which in return reduces masking effects. This is, however, on only very few tracks, so it is mostly making up for deficiencies in the mastering of the track.
