Value and Conclusion

  • The KnewKey Rocksete keyboard with integrated JBL speakers is now up for pre-order, with shipping in February 2020, and costs $299.99 from the KnewKey Store for customers in the USA. There is currently a sale ongoing for $239 as of the date this review was written, but it appears to be a temporary holiday season sale.
  • Unique combination of keyboard and audio output peripherals
  • Excellent surround sound speaker system from JBL
  • Separately controlled switch lighting and audio light bars
  • Dedicated media playback and volume control over speakers
  • Ergonomic 75% form factor keyboard
  • Good battery life for both systems courtesy of separate, large batteries
  • Accessory set and hinge makes for a good stand setup for mobile devices of various sizes
  • Extremely expensive relative to an average mechanical keyboard by itself
  • Bluetooth connectivity of keyboard was hit or miss
  • Actual typing experience was subjectively worse than with other keyboards
The KnewKey Rocksete might as well be a tale of two products as it consists of a fairly excellent audio system paired with a keyboard that is not so good. It is unfortunate then that the Rocksete is a keyboard first and foremost as it seemingly has taken the traits of their previous Rymek keyboard to heart with the same complaints of mediocre Bluetooth connectivity present with this sample. I can excuse the packaging and finish as this is a pre-retail version, but the actual hardware inside is common across the board, and I can only go with what my sample did, especially as I just went through a few other wireless keyboards that worked great in the same testing situations. The saving grace here is that the Rocksete can just as easily be used in USB mode, which works flawlessly.

That having been said, KnewKey's collaboration with Harman/JBL makes for a fairly unique combination of two peripherals, with the surround sound speaker system in combination with the audio-reactive lighting making for an impressive statement in conjunction with the physical looks of the Rocksete. The speakers are really good and no doubt a large part of the asking cost. At $299, however, it is priced out of many people's budgets. The stock keycaps designed for Apple users also show who is being targeted here, and an inclusion of Windows-specific keycaps and perhaps even a USB pass-through port, would have helped appeal to a larger audience. If you know this is for you, that's great, and there is definitely enough here to peak the interest of many. Just don't be that guy who takes the Rocksete to a coffee shop and plays music loudly while typing on its Outemu Blue mechanical switches.
