NVIDIA GeForce 8600 & 8500 Preview Review

The New Line-Up

The long anticipated G84 based 8600 GT and 8600 GTS series cards will replace the 7600 GT and 7900 GS respectively in the high-end mainstream segment. While the new DirectX 10 parts cost $20 US Dollars more initially, they will soon settle at a comparable price point. This also means, that performance should be fairly identical or just slightly higher when compared to these GeForce 7 parts.

The 8500 GT will not replace the low-/mid-range segment. It will complement the current GeForce 7 series at just $10 US Dollars more than a 7600 GS. The same as with the G84 based cards applies here when the performance is compared. A GeForce 8500 GT should be just a tad faster than a 7600 GS, but slower than a 7600 GT.

The complete, new NVIDIA line-up will look like this:
  • GeForce 8800 GTX
  • GeForce 8800 GTS 640MB
  • GeForce 8880 GTS 320MB
  • GeForce 8600 GTS
  • GeForce 8600 GT
  • GeForce 8500 GT
  • GeForce 7600 GS
  • GeForce 7300 GT
  • GeForce 7300 LE
  • GeForce 7100

OEM Products

As it has been the case with the GeForce 7400, NVIDIA will be offering two further GeForce 8 series cards - the 8300 GS and 8400 GS. These will be exclusive to OEMs and will not be available at retail. The launch of these cards is set for the end of April. Both of these cards will be based on the G86, the same chip used for the 8500 GT. This means that the OEM products will not have an internal SLI connector and will use DDR2 memory as well. These parts should have the same amount of unified shaders and ROPs as the 8500 GT, but their GPU and memory will be clocked slower and they may use less memory.
