Thermaltake Aqua RX R-1 Review

Value and Conclusion

  • Thermaltake's Aqua Brazing All Copper series W3 waterblock retails for around $24
  • Universal
  • Compact
  • Both 3/8” and 1/4” barbs included
  • Might be too restrictive for 1/2" setups
  • Performance is not too great
The R1 is not a product that one would come across every day. It is unique, as for memory cooling, there are no standards – it is up to the manufacturer to devise a mounting mechanism, as well as an effective heatsink.
Thermaltake has taken on the role of designing a safe-to-operate and high performance block well. Of the memory waterblocks I have seen so far, the Thermaltake is definitely one to remember. It has a revolutionary, compact design, which will allow it to be mounted on nearly any motherboard. Revolutionary as it is, however, on our testbed, the results can be classified just as “good” – a 3MHz increase cannot be called amazing or spectacular.
Does it work? Yes. Should I buy it? If you are a person that needs to squeeze every last megahertz out of the memory they are running, then definitely. If not, then memory waterblocks are still in their infancy, so I would refrain from a purchase for the time being.
