Value and Conclusion

  • The UE MEGABOOM sells for $299.
  • Great design
  • Rugged
  • Waterproof, IPX7 rating (immersion proof) with, presumably, its caps on
  • App packed with features
  • Great sound quality
  • Double-up feature
  • Great app for both iOS and Android
  • Pricey at £299
  • Not as portable as the original
UE's newest addition to the BOOM line-up is nothing less of a stellar performing portable speaker. This is the first Bluetooth portable speaker that can effectively double up as a compact in-door and out-door speaker. The sound quality of the new MEGABOOM is just as good as with many compact systems when situated in a cramped and rather sub-optimal listening environment, which makes it a great do-it-all device for someone looking for something to use around the home, both in-door and out.

Compared to the original, lugging the MEGABOOM around is the only negative we can come up with since it is larger and heavier, which makes it quite a bit less wieldy. The bump up in sound quality does, however, more than make up for it if you primarily want something for use around the house. The MEGABOOM does not make the BOOM obsolete since UE decreased the price of the old model which still has its uses.

Overall, the MEGABOOM covers most listening scenarios better, but it is slightly worse off when it comes to portability, so if your primary concerns are sound quality and volume, the MEGABOOM will fit the bill better, but if you want something to reside in your backpack, you will find yourself wanting the BOOM instead.
