The Power Supply

The Ultra X-Blaster comes in a few variants. We received the 400W XVS modular power supply already installed inside the case. Ultra also offers the case in black or beige with a 350W V-Power PSU or none at all. This is great, as it gives the user the choice of what combination to buy.

There is a white sticker on the side of the power supply to show what it is capable of. It has also passed a lot of quality assurance tests, as can be seen by the black round stickers.

This looks quite good for a 400W power supply. You should not have any trouble powering a fairly powerful single GPU, dual core system with this PSU.

The power supply has five Molex connectors to plug in the supplied cables. The 24 pin ATX and 4-pin P4 connectors are hard wired to the PSU. As is the case with all modular Ultra power supplies, the included cable are of the FlexForce kind. This is how Ultra describes them:
  • Manageable - FlexForce Cables are designed to be easily routed and hidden within your case.
  • Increased Airflow - Special design promotes easy cable management and 30% better airflow than ordinary cables by easily routing cable under the motherboard, behind drive bays, etc.
  • Design - Cables are dressed in a sleek looking titanium like finish.
These FlexForce cables are kept in black, keeping with the color theme of the case and power supply. These cables are truly much easier to work with than the standard or even the sleeved kind, as they bend with much less force and can be tucked away to optimize cable management.

These are the cables included. As you can see, there is only a single SATA and one floppy connector but six 12V Molex connectors. It would have been nice to see a modular SATA cable with two or three SATA connectors. Many users will be forced to use Molex to SATA converters, which do not go with the black look of the rest of the cables.

The power supply itself is of normal size and is a bit lighter than other 400W PSUs. It has a black 120 mm fan to keep the components cool. This setup should also help circulate the air around CPU and power circuitry on the mainboard.
