Value and Conclusion

  • The Xigmatek Achilles sells for $44.99 US Dollars.
  • Solid performance
  • Four exposed 8mm nickel-plated heatpipes
  • Unique white LEDs
  • Quiet fan
  • Rubber fan silencers
  • Simple installation
  • Available backplate mounting kit for LGA-775
  • CPU may not contact all four heatpipes evenly
The Xigmatek Achilles S1284 is a huge improvement over the old HDT-S1283. There are four 8mm heatpipes used this time, and the pipes are nickel-plated to prevent tarnishing. The new fan is much quieter, and its white LEDs provide a unique look for a CPU heatsink. The rest of the design improvements are great, and the heatsink performs even better than its sibling. Add in the simple stock installation and the optional LGA-775 backplate mounting kit, and the Achilles can please both beginners and die-hard enthusiasts.

The only thing that may be a concern is that the extra heatpipe may prevent the edges from making ideal contact with a small heatspreader.

Overall the Achilles S1284 is a huge step forward for Xigmatek's line of HDT coolers.
