Intel Redesigning Core i7 980X Stock HSF

Intel is working on a small design change to the Core i7 980X Extreme Edition processor. The change covers the Intel thermal solution (HSF) only, and consists of a redesigned impeller that makes it quieter, overall. This is done by downsizing the edge of the impeller blades to 0.3 mm, and perforating the impeller hub (central portion connected to the motor). The slightly revised Core i7 980X Extreme Edition package should start shipping from June 7.

DrPepperHe was pointing out that it's intels main priority to cut costs as much as possible. Also it's a win/win really. The cooler is quiter and probably cheaper. It could actually be more expensive to cut the new holes we don't really know. Also the price of an EE cpu would not change even if it came without a cooler. What your paying for with an EE cpu is its unlocked multi and the fact it is an overclockable chip.
The plastic parts are injection molded. I'm sure a modification was made to the cores/cavities of the mold in order to add the holes and blade angle change. This would actually reduce the shot weight (amount of plastic) of the part and result in a cost savings for them.
It would proabaly not be a huge savings (some hundreth of a cent per part), but if they make lots of them it adds up in the long run.

wahdangunhmm still no heatpipe? it's useless
It does have heapipes AFAIK.
TheGuruStudI know of one such idiot, that was not only dumb enough to buy this cpu, but also used the stock cooler. They wanted to know if the cpu should always be running at 70-90 C

I told them, yes, that's how POS intel cpu runs

He was too good for an overclocked PII and ATI video. He spent about 3k dollars on some prebuilt crap that's not even faster than my cheap rig. My mom always told me that you can't fix stupid.
If he got a 980x it's probably faster than yours at stock. Anyway intel's cpu's are not POS thats just ignorant fanboyism.

intel whups AMD at stock speeds, its just price to performance that AMD has going for them (by a good margin really)

Ah well I wasn't sure how they made those holes and changes. I assumed they used a drill to drill these holes or something.

They could do it that way, but anytime you add an ancillary operation to a part it increases the cost (whether it is manually done or automated). To change the mold would incur some cost in the mold modifications, but that is almost always cheaper in the long run than doing an off-press, secondary operation.

deffinatly should just throw in a cooler caplaple of OC'in the proc let alone run it at stock with reasonable temps

There's more to the story than what I told. I phrased it that way to him b/c he's a retarded fan boy. He thinks having an i7 will give the fastest comp possible, which is just noobish and a load of bollocks.
I was going to build a PC for him, but I wasn't going to do an intel lol (I don't care for him so it's my rules). He's so fruity he thought that he could have the best thing by paying an extravagant amount of money.

He even paid for the new photoshop....what does that tell you (even though he's never going to use it except for simple effects haha)? Paid 3k for an i7 laptop as well. I don't think he has a lot of money (student). I just think he
saves and blows it on dumb crap.

He plays WoW and messes with photoshop, I'm so sure that i7 is gonna make the PC faster.

why cant intel use dimples on the fans?... they're vortex generators which reduce the drag and hence increase the speed of the air flowing over the fins, as well as simulatenously reducing the volume (of the fan chopping the air).

Do the designers of coolers even use CFD for it?

Then let him waste his money ? It's not really your problem unless he owe's you money.
