In Wake Of SOPA Defeat and Rising Profits, IFPI Calls For 'SOPA Plus' Migraine Tablet

Yes, that's right, SOPA might have been set back for now, but the vested interests from the big media corporations (music/movies/news etc) that want it implemented unsurprisingly aren't sitting idle and are pushing for ever more draconian measures aka 'SOPA Plus'. A digital music report (PDF) asks for everything that was in the original SOPA and then some, with a wishlist of seven 'fixes':

  • Three strikes schemes aka 'graduated response'. Users identified (in what reliable way?) as repeat infringers, will get three warning notices from their ISP and then be cut off from the internet. Presumably, this will include a blacklist, so that they can't sign up for any other ISP either
  • Site blocking. At the media industry say-so, any website on the planet can be blocked over mere allegations of piracy. An example of this already happening is www.newzbin.com, which is now blocked by British Telecom in the UK after being ordered to do so by the court. Attempting to view it now simply shows "Error - site blocked". Nice. BT can't even be bothered to show a template web page explaining the circumstances of this censorship. The report claims: "Site blocking is effective in dealing with the various new forms of infringement such as cyberlockers and websites. However, an approach based exclusively on website blocking is insufficient by itself, given the importance of major P2P services that are decentralised and therefore not covered by blocking"
  • Search engines "need help". It's not enough that search engines like Google remove links to infringing content in order to stay on the right side of the DMCA, but now need to prioritize their links too according to the legality of the content: "A basic measure such as this would help consumers not only avoid viruses and malware, but also being directed unwittingly towards content piracy."
  • Payment processors should cut off pirates voluntarily. The idea is to have companies like MasterCard and Visa unilaterally take action against infringing websites and stop payments from reaching them. In return, they get immunity from prosecution by the content industry by doing so
  • Advertising networks cut off funds to pirate sites by stopping business with them, or they will get sued too
  • Mobile operators are not exempt. 'Piracy' happens over mobile phones, laptops with wireless connections, iPads etc as well as the traditional wired internet connection. Therefore, mobile operators are expected to perform similar duties as their wired counterparts
  • Keep suing the big sites. The report claims that litigation has played its part in the US recovery, pointing to the closure of Limewire. It claims that P2P piracy fell from 16% in the fourth quarter of 2007, to 9% in the fourth quarter of 2010 when Limewire stopped operating.
On top of this, they insist that players not cherry pick which measures they will implement, but insist that every player implement every measure. One would think that such drastic measures would be needed, because the industry was spiralling downwards into an abyss of lost profits and bankruptcy. However, nothing could be further from the truth, they simply ignore the various independent studies that show piracy to have a negligible effect on sales and to even spur growth in some cases. Instead, they claim that their profits would be even bigger without piracy, as IFPI CEO Frances Moore said:

"With a healthy 8 per cent increase in our digital revenues in 2011-the first time the annual growth rate has risen since records began in 2004-some might feel tempted to say that a troubled era for the music industry is coming to an end. Such complacency now, however, would be a great mistake. The truth is that record companies are building a successful digital music business in spite of the environment in which they operate, not because of it."

No, the truth is that these big media corporations are greedy and corrupt, along with their sock puppet governments that they control, as MPAA CEO, Chris Dodd recently demonstrated in arrogant and graphic detail when he said on Fox News:

"Those who count on quote 'Hollywood' for support need to understand that this industry is watching very carefully who's going to stand up for them when their job is at stake. Don't ask me to write a check for you when you think your job is at risk and then don't pay any attention to me when my job is at stake."

This has caused quite a stir and unsurprisingly, news about this went viral. Now, a White House petition has been set up to investigate him and the MPAA for bribery and corruption. The petition can be accessed here.

The graphic shows the distribution of legal services, according to IFPI.

There's more analysis on this story over at Ars Technica.

Fxthats right Ford. having a defeatist attitude never accomplished anything except having yourself to blame for being a part of a solution that you didnt want

this is nothing short of censorship. this is a war of ideas & information. people around the world are starting to gain ground and the governments realize this. dont be fooled about the whole piracy spiel. there are many recent examples of them having little difficulty in cracking down on "violators/pirates" as they already have many tools and angles at their disposal
Yeah that's right! Stick it to the man! As long as you can have your SOPA free internet who cares if they took away your right to a fair trial on Jan. 1?! Who cares they can now use the military as a police force and hold you indefinitely without charge! We want to be prosecution free from pirating! THATS what's important.

Why do I have a defeatist attitude? Because as a whole people are stupid. They care more about material things and how the government may effect their acquisition of bling then the fact that same government ALREADY PASSED A LAW that took away their due processes. The NDAA circumvented the 6th and 4th amendment and all people talk about is SOPA. People only care when it may effect them in the immediate future. It wont be until they knock on your door to take you away for talking shit on your "SOPA free" internet will your priorities come clear.

We just got indoctrinated into a police state on January 1 and all you people care about is if youtube will be working this time next year. So yeah.......I have a defeatist attitude. People are stupid and there is nothing I can do about it.

xfire1. Stop buying and pirating content from any of those media industries supporting these laws
2. Cause loss revenue
3. No money for the companies means no lawyers and no more bribery
4. ????
5. Profit!!!
Easier said than done. Try and go convince white-trash girls not to buy the latest album from their favorite diva. Can't be done. (just an example)

NDAA Section 1021 has already happened. Not much we can do about that except take it to the Supreme Court. SOPA/PIPA/OPEN/SOPA+ hasn't happened yet so we can do something about them.

Also remember that Section 1021 was basically pork on the NDAA bill. I bet most that voted for the bill disapprove of that section being appended.

Sure keep believing you can cry louder then the lobbyists wallets are deep. I love how you expect the Supreme Court to rule in favor of the people against the feds. These are the same people who said corporations are people. And keep making excuses for the assholes who signed for the NDAA. Keep telling yourself that lie its bound to come true.

Bend over and take it or bend over and take it is your only option. I WANT THEM TO GET THIER WAY. I just wrote an email to my senator stating how much I love the idea of SOPA and the NDAA. Saying I think they are great plans.

This way if we support their BS they will keep going with it and it will push people to the brink so we can reset this crap finally and put the feds back in thier place.

I now fully support SOPA and the NDAA and troops in our streets! LET FREEDOM RING!

I completely agree with xfire, just stop. There is nothing of value to purchase out there right now. And of course do not pirate, it just adds fuel to the fire. Of course this whole thing is way beyond pirating, but it is this which gives them the leverage to continue this sopa crap. Remove the fulcrum they are using to provide this pressure, and it fails. Stop buying their garbage and it fails further. In fact it applies negative pressure, hopefully to the point of stopping them. Now is the time to fight against this, because later it will be too late.

Maybe too late down there, but not up here. I believe people in the past were willing to fight for their freedom, weren't they? Did they not succeed? If enough non-Americans take up the internet fight, things can change. I'm not going to allow a foreign government to take away my rights as a citizen of the world, or my country. I'm certainly not going to allow them to dictate their laws on me. I don't live there, and for good reason. No, the fight has just begun, and it's going to get dam ugly, I guarantee it.

I used to have that same opinion but I have been thinking about it more. 'we the people' are not unified just yet. for us to turn the tables and take back power, something ugly would replace what we have now

either way, things are getting really bad and now it has become materialized to many why all of these censorship bills are being proposed. they dont was us to have forums like this or social networks to unify in a approach to solving the problem and ultimately, taking back our freedom

it isnt all internet tough guy talk. there are many movements that are growing and being created. people are waking up to this new reality and joining these movements- hence the censorship legislation

there are states taking measures to nullify NDAA and proposing a return to a gold standard. there are sheriffs meeting to create awareness and learn the constitution that they swore an oath to defend. we have the Ron Paul movement teaching many what made this country great. that is just a few examples, there are many others

raising awareness is crucial right now. we must unify as much as possible as fast as possible before all hell breaks loose. the last thing we want is a civil war and the People vs the Government

lucifersamaat least.... he was an honest politician?!
then he went on how sites abused the power they have to fight legislators.... am i going nuts or is there some kind of contradiction between the above quoted and his later claim? cuz i would think the media is abusing its power of legislators too...... right?!!?!??!?!?!??!?!?!?!

why does the media want to get these laws in order, simple, to take away the ability to get their stuff for free so there MIGHT be a slight increase in profits (slight is reasonable, anything beyond that is just blatant craziness with the world economy as it is now), but lets not fool our selves, would that slight increase in profit warrant all that? or the ability to sue others like "other" companies do now and get fat faaaat profit?

i honestly dont remember the last time i downloaded a new song... old yes, but new? hell no, checking some on youtube but that is as far as i will go, they are not worth it, gaming.... going mmorpg now, and old ones only, movies... too disappointed to go to cinema and even when i download them for free, i watch them while multitasking... honest /sigh at what is supposed to be entertainment nowadays.
You don't get it.

The idea isn't profits.

Profits are just a semi-reasonable argument to disguise the real reason they want censorship.

The real reason "the media" want censorship is because "the media" are controlled by some extremely powerful economic monsters at the top. These people (yes there are humans controlling those humongous fortunes), these monstrously rich people also happen to gang up together as a club and realize that together, they control "the media", "big pharma", "big banking", "big military", "big construction", "big technology", and pretty much "big anything else at all". Throwing their weight around, they also control the governments.

Do you think these monstrously wealthy people want money? Put yourself in their shoes... They have ***EVERYTHING***. 500ft long yachts with multiple helipads manned by 100% supermodel-grade babes in bikinis as one of their MANY MANY toys. What, you think they want MONEY? What on earth would they do with it?

THEY OWN GOVERNMENTS WORLDWIDE.

They don't want no stinking money, THEY PRINT THE STUFF IN THEIR OWN PRIVATE CENTRAL BANKS.

The only thing for them to have is MORE ***POWER***

The power to shut you up.
The power to put you in jail indefinitely.
The power to put you under torture and watch you bleed just for fun.
The power to depopulate the earth so that they can privately enjoy it without YOU getting in the way.

Now you will say, no, they cannot possibly be that evil. So, to you I say, "power corrupts". With the amount of power these people hold now, how corrupt can they possibly be? Yeah they are completely evil, because HAVING doesn't do it anymore. TAKING AWAY FROM OTHERS is the only thing they haven't completely achieved yet.

So they're working on that.
TheMailMan78Yeah that's right! Stick it to the man! As long as you can have your SOPA free internet who cares if they took away your right to a fair trial on Jan. 1?! I wonder why... Oh yeah, when they send soldiers in the streets and tell them to "beat up and arrest or rape or kill anyone they don't like"... Youtube will be down, due to someone "infringing copyright law". What a shame huh.

I am sad to say I agree.

Raising awareness is something JFK was trying to do in a speech a long time ago, and most likely the reason why he got assassinated. Little lesson in history here, for those who need it:

"Raising Awareness" was for those days when the shitheads could still be stopped.

while I am pissed off that previous generations of people didnt take a firm stance against all of this bs and have placed us in this circumstance, as much as I hate to say it- they didnt have as many pieces of the puzzle as we do now to know what we know. these powers have operated in stealth mode to solidify their position and power

if we initiated right now, there would be many people siding with the government out of sheer ignorance

there is now a lot of evidence and truth is spreading like a plague to the masses and that is why they are trying to censor us because they are losing mindshare of the citizens. I am not saying we have plenty of time to raise awareness but we need at least another 6 months. why fight your neighbor today when he is on your side tomorrow?

Please they knew what was happening. Why do you think all the hippies protested in the streets? No one cared then. No one really cares now. Not until they are starving. Those same hippies are the machine they protested against. This will happen again and again. History demands it. What a patriot needs to do now is embrace it. Push it. So that it comes full tilt. So people cannot ignore it anymore. Like I said I wrote an email to my senator saying how great the NDAA and SOPA is. I hope they keep going full speed with them. Only when they get their way and people finally raise up WILL ANYTHING HAPPEN.

Fighting it will just delay it and thus delay the change we need. Stop fighting it and start supporting it.

It's the boiling frog system. You put a frog in a cookpot filled with cold water. It's comfy. Raise the temperature slowly enough and the frog will stay even when it reaches boiling.

It's the same with people: humans can get used to anything, provided it is presented to them slowly and gently enough.

Make those bills pass fast and hard enough, masses just MIGHT wake up.

Exactly. If you are fighting these bills you are unpatriotic IMO. We need MORE regulation and control. If we are gonna go police state lets do it American style. BALLS DEEP.
