Pioneer Intros BDR-S08J Series Blu-ray Writer Drives

Pioneer introduced the new BDR-S08J line of internal SATA Blu-ray writer drives in the standard 5.25-inch form-factor. The series includes three variants based on the bezel color, BDR-S08J-W (matte white), BDR-S08J-BK (piano black), and BDR-S08J-KR (rubberized black), pictured in that order below. The drives feature SATA 3 Gb/s interface with 4 MB cache, and are capable of writing Blu-ray disc (BD) -R at 15X, BD-R double-layer at 14X, BR-R triple-layer at 8X, BD-R quadruple-layer at 6X, single-, dual- and triple-layer BD-RE at 6X; DVDs at 16X, and CDs at 40X. The three will include Windows 8-compatible drivers and versions of PowerDVD 10 and PowerDirector 9 software from Cyberlink. The three will reach stores (beginning with Japanese), in mid-November.

why do the older specs always get a speed decrease ... why can't we have 22-24x DVD-R and 52x CD-R as well?

I noticed this with newer DVD burners as well... they lowered the burn speed on CDs

I'd like to just have the one drive when I upgrade... but I guess I'll have to have 2... limits case options a bit since I'll be keeping this SONY 20X DVD±R DVD Burner with 12X DVD-RAM 20X DVD...

I personally prefer that the manufacturers focus on Blu-ray performance at the expense of CD/DVD. The difference in time between burning an entire CD at 40X vs 52X is about 25 seconds. Compare that to the difference in burning a Blu-ray disc at 15X vs 12X at 90 seconds. Eventually there will come a point where the speed gains are too small to be reasonable, but that hasn't occurred yet.

My guess is that the focus on Blu-ray is a cost saving measure. If you have three of the best lasers (CD/DVD/BD) available in one disc drive it would be significantly more expensive to produce than a drive with one good BD laser and two mediocre CD & DVD lasers. Plus, marketing would probably have a challenge convincing consumers to buy a Blu-ray drive because of it's DVD and CD speeds.

I agree 100%, CD's are a dead format, and DVD's are on their way out for mass storage, the last time I burned a CD was back in high school and that was over 10 years ago.

I don't see the loss of 1-4 x performance on a format that's dead as anything bad.

External is the way to go

I dont even have one physically installed on my Antec 1100. I use an external drive that way I can use it on a laptop if needed.

They SHOULD be lowered more than they are. You should NEVER burn any optical disc at more than 25% of its rated speed anyway.
