QNAP Partners with Canonical to Enhance NAS with Ubuntu OS

QNAP Systems, Inc. has announced today a partnership with Canonical. The partnership will provide an advanced platform for the development of services and applications for the Internet of Things (IoT) using both Ubuntu and QTS operating systems. Canonical and QNAP will cooperate to provide, promote, and enable the creation of an ecosystem of IoT applications across home, SMB, and enterprises.

QNAP leverages its NAS operating system, QTS, with its built-in, mature, and comprehensive virtualization platform and further, integrates the Ubuntu operating system to provide a complete and familiar software development platform for software developers. Users are able to enjoy simultaneously the wide variety of apps from the QTS App Center, and diversified services available on Ubuntu.
Using Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, QNAP NAS users are able to access an intuitive desktop computer experience with a complete set of productivity and entertainment applications. Selecting the latest Ubuntu release also enables developers to take advantage of, and create applications using the snap packaging format, providing users both more secure, and reliable services for desktop, server, mobile, and IoT devices. This universal app format is particularly popular on Ubuntu Core, the embedded version of Ubuntu, opening the door to a world of IoT apps on QNAP NAS.

The two companies will also encourage the creation of IoT applications for NAS using the new snap format . QNAP NAS provide highly secure personal storage and make an ideal private IoT gateway, comprehensive local development platform, and a reliable, dedicated cloud solution.

"The key benefit of using Ubuntu 16.04 LTS and snaps is that developers can build their applications in a single format that will work across desktop and IoT - which dramatically lowers costs linked to cross-platform management, migration, and re-engineering." said Mark Shuttleworth Founder of Canonical.

QNAP Linux Station v1.1.893 is available from the QTS App Center now and fully supports the latest Ubuntu 16.04 LTS. Install Ubuntu 16.04 to enjoy the wealth of services on Ubuntu and start developing IOT and desktop apps using the snap format. QNAP and Ubuntu will also be demonstrating their solution at Computex between 31 May - 4 June at booth J0830, showcasing a number of applications across IoT and desktop.

Note: Linux Station requires a QNAP NAS with at least 4GB RAM.
