Sony planning multimedia PS3

Despite having upset some users by forcing Blu-ray upon anyone who buys their latest console, now Sony are taking it a step further and planning an updated PS3 which is not primarily intended as a gaming machine, but for multimedia. The new version of their console will feature improved anti-vibration on the Blu-ray drive to make it quieter, 512MB XDR memory, an improved PSU and two HDMI connectors dividing the audio and video. The appearance of the console may be very different to the standard Playstation 3 but it should still play all PS3 games. The Playstation itself has always been made by Sony Computer Entertainment, however this may be direct from Sony and will probably be very expensive.

So now it has 512XDR?

This will be taken advantage of by games?

So if I bought the 600$ PS3, then I'm already outdated?

Sony trying to give me the impression I should just spend the money and upgrade my comp with a DX10 card instead wasting time with its high_end_console/low_end_PC ?

I'm sure the extra memory won't really help with games, even Sony wouldn't go as far to outdate its own console by a small upgrade. Might allow it to do certain tasks in the background I guess, like if it has two drives you might be able to pause a DVD and play a game, I'm not sure tbh. But I would still recommend waiting until DX10 takes off and then moving to that rather than getting a PC, because the PS3 will still data quickly relative to PCs.

So let me get this right.... I should pay $1900 MORE than the current top of the line model ($600), for what???

Anti-vibration? Mine's very quiet already.... :wtf:
More advanced power supply unit? Why? It runs fine already. :ohwell:
Two HDMI connectors? For Sony, a few bucks and some wiring... :shadedshu
512MB XDR memory? Ok, maybe.... for a couple hundred bucks. :)

Where's the bigger hard drive guys??? Where's the video/audio input? Where's the direct DVI output? How about some firewire ports? iPod direct jack?? Multi what??? Media.... what???

I'm sorry, but this just seems absolutely absurd :twitch: .... Something isn't adding up here.... :ohwell:

I think SONY have done the right thing... they have recognised that the current PS3 design and manufacture quality has failed and it isnt selling as they had hoped.

So they've taken the initiative to correct the device, calling it an "upgraded multimedia device", but YOU CAN BET in 12 months time, it will be ONLY this model that they will manufacture and sell, and the PS3 (beta) will be graveyarded.

There isn't a market for something like this. It doesn't have PVR functionality, it doesn't output audio optically, it's just an HD film player and a games machine. A decent PC can do that and much more and cost less!

Well, the release might have been poorly planned, not having more units, etc, but you can hardly say that they aren't selling.... have you tried looking for one lately? They are constantly sold out, in every store (no eBay doesn't count, it's not a retailer) .... I'd say that's a good sign for Sony. How much better can you expect them to be selling, if they're all sold out?

I think that would be a poor marketing tactic, as the article says the multi-media versions will be selling for around $2500 a piece (that's US dollars). I can't afford that... can you? :ohwell:

These are only early specs, there could well be other improvements like a larger hard drive. I think Japan was the only country that ever got the PSX in the end, but I might be wrong. Never saw one here in the UK.
