MXM is pointless. it has never caught on, and you cant buy the GPUs readily. When you do find them, they cost far more then their full size counterparts (GTX 1060 MXM for $650 anybody?).

Agreed. I wish they had because I have a 4th gen core i7 MSI laptop and would love to be able to upgrade the graphics. The chip is plenty fast, but the graphics card is meh and if I could slot a 10 series in there it would be perfect.

Just because you don't use it doesn't mean it's pointless. The main reason it hasn't caught on is the demand for terirble thin and light laptops made out of plastic that throttle themselves to death. Its a sad shame they never did catch on though...
You can easily find a 1060 MXM for $300+, which IMO is decent for its ability to slot into laptops. I would still go for a 980M mxm, as it still supports LVDS signalling, and not just eDP, allowing for the use of legacy laptops with only 60HZ panels to use it
