Extravagant Intel Core i9-9900K Packaging Pictured

Thought AMD is the only chipmaker that can go over the top with packaging its processors? Intel wants to play this game, too. The company is going all out with differentiating its 8-core/16-thread Core i9-9900K socket LGA1151 processor from the rest of the pack. A big part of this is the retail packaging, pictured below. The box, if you can call it that, is an acrylic dodecahedron, a 12-sided 3D object with pentagonal faces. The front face has prominent "Core i9" branding, and marking that confirms that Intel will refer to "Coffee Lake-Refresh" as the 9th generation Core processor family. At this point, we don't know if this voluminous box packs a cooler besides the chip, but the possibility is rather slim. The Core i9-9900K is an 8-core/16-thread socket LGA1151 processor based on the 14 nm++ "Coffee Lake-Refresh" silicon. It is clocked at 3.60 GHz, with a staggering 5.00 GHz maximum Turbo Boost frequency.

the Threadripper 1XXX and 2XXX packaging was great looking and innovative, not really over the top .... but that one is just

also pricing :ohwell::rolleyes:

one more, till goodbye Intel Hello Ryzen ( i regret paying almost the price of a 2600X for a 4690K back in the days hehe )

R0H1TSo both your points sound like claptrap.
Stop feeding the troll, maybe it will go away. Actually I am sure he'll go away, you just have to stop arguing with him he's not even reading the stuff you write nor does he care.

Seriously, how can you people fall for this ?

Honestly, Intel, another bonehead move - This again makes Intel look like they're following AMD.

Great CPU in otherwise odd packaging.
This isn't what everybody who buys this CPU is going to get btw. This is mostly for media

AnimalpakIm in need to upgrade my setup and im aiming to these chips, but they seems to be too expensive for me !!

450 $ is the right price for a flag mainstream CPU from Intel. Hope they will sell the version without heatsink and a square package.
That packaging doesn't include the heat sink according to Tom's . So you are looking at a little more not less for the cooling

I am baffled! AMD up their box game with ryzen and intel goes full re***d creating the least optimal package shipping-wise! :D And that pricetag ; ufff. Im glad I decided to stay on my 4770K a year more! :0

Well, my Core-X box was pretty bland and forgettable... and probably should go to the trash. Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

But I wouldn't complain about either of the chips themselves. What the hell do you guys want? One of those "iJustine" unboxing Apple videos?

Threadripper has a damn cool box. This looks like a dice from Dungeons and Dragons.

Looks like some weird Chinese game dice, or a like a strange 14 sided new iteration of the iconic "8-Ball" that you ask questions of. Sure store it safe and out of the Sun and in 50 Years it might be slightly more valuable the than what's "Inside" as face it a CPU of today is not some collector piece.

If you do I think it is that says a lot about the my 80286 PGA or a Pentium III 1.4Ghz Tualatin in a Powerleap slot-one adapter are going to make me richer that what they cost new..

so the CPU is marked up because of the new box? that I am going to throw in the trash... I want the CPU not a cool box. and that isn't me calling the box cool, because it is NOT!

obviously ... since a 2700X will do the same for less (ok a little less IPC but the gap isn't that great ) well for Intel fan i get that paying 270$ (well if the price will stay 580ish $ where i live ... it will be rather 620+) more will get them a security sentiment about how powerful their new CPU is :D

let's wait for the 2800X (well the price difference will not be 270 but rather 170... although depend the strategy .... i.e.: putting the 2700X at 2600X price and 2800X at 2700X price ... ) or just the next gen ...
well i know a 2600/2700 non X/X would suffice for me (for a 6C/12T or 8C/16T ) and nope ... a turbo at max 5.0 on 1 core is not really an incentive for paying that much more

Except they're not the "same." As GPU becomes faster, the difference increases. You pay less for AMD, but you also get less from them. 9900k @ 5GHz will steal the the crown from our current emperor 8700k until Intel decides to usurp their own throne with Ice Lake.

At most FPS gaming scenarios it will be darn near identical. I've used both. Not sure what that graph is smoking... but it's likely choosing a very particular intel biased situation. (and before you go "lol everything is" there ARE AMD biased situations too).

Vayra86A 12 sided 3D object

For an 8c16t CPU

Called Core i9

Why not just a simple cube then?
Very good catch. The Marketing and Product Design kind of sucks big time at Intel.
Personally I would have created a deltahedron shape with 8 sides colored in a stronger color (to show the real cores) and the other 8 on a lighter one.
francisw19Kinda looks like a soccer ball...I could see people kicking these around the store :D
What's "soccer"?? Never heard of that... Must be another Yankee invented word.

I can understand weirdo design packaging for Threadripper since it's a HEDT platform, there's nothing wrong with it looking quite exclusive. Rather, it makes a lot of sense to make HEDT line look special for the amount of money you pay, plus they had to make a bigger packaging for their huge ass threadripper CPUs anyway.

But this is supposed to be mainstream, it's supposed to be produced in bullshit large volumes. This smells like they're making a whole new segment of "premium" between mainstream and HEDT which I don't like.

Sorry, not sure what you are bubbling about. Football and "soccer" are the same thing. That's why is called FIFA and not FISA. ;)
That overly boring abomination called USA Rugby just stole the name from the REAL sport that is actually using THE FEET to play the ball, not hands :laugh::kookoo::kookoo:

That, along with a nod to MGS... wonder if anyone else will think about that before reaching this post?

We Americans noticed that overly boring abomination called football many years ago, and we thought it was a name too good for such a silly sport, so we reappropriated it to our totally awesome "USA football" and gave the name soccer to your silly sport. The rest of the world doesn't have to like it, but we just didn't want to bore Americans with soccer when they thought they were gonna see FOOTBALL! However, we invite you to join us in embracing football and putting soccer in its place. :laugh:o_O
