Brendan Iribe Oculus VR Co-Founder Leaves Company

Brendan Iribe, a co-founder of Oculus VR, has announced that he will be leaving the company today in a Facebook post. Having been with the company since its inception in July of 2012, he is now moving on after in his own words "six incredible years." Having been a part of the initial VR push with the Oculus Rift, he has left an indelible mark on an industry that is still growing into its own today.

Calling his tenure at Oculus and Facebook a "transformative experience" Iribe was thankful to the people around him including his team that has been a part of his journey thus far. However, after 20 years he considers now a good time to take a break and "to recharge, reflect and be creative." Even so, it will be interesting to see what he does next, considering he has already co-founded a previous company, Scaleform that was bought by Autodesk in 2011 and then worked for Gaikai before the Sony acquisition in 2012. With a track record in tech that spans multiple industries, it likely won't be long before Iribe is working on the next big thing.
While details as to why he is leaving are lacking, according to Tech Crunch, it may have something to do with the cancellation of the "Rift 2" virtual reality headset, which was canceled just last week. With the cancellation it appears the differences in opinion between Iribe and Facebook became too great, resulting in this recent turn of events. While nothing has been fully substantiated, it would make sense considering Facebook has seen multiple higher executives leave the company due to mounting tensions including Instagram co-founders, Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger, as well as WhatsApp co-founder Jan Koum.

swirl09According to this variety.com/2018/digital/news/oculus-co-founder-brendan-iribe-is-leaving-facebook-1202988298/ there is more to come for the Rift.

They have teased various things, and it does appear much work was done on what would be the successor to the Rift. I think maybe they are refocusing on the all-in-ones, until the GPU and market in general moves on and could handle a proper successor.
True but nothing is set in stone and Facebook's response was generic. However what is clear is Iribe wanted to create a true successor and got shut down for the time being. When your the former CEO and head of the PC VR division and your project gets canceled well i would think that would piss me off a bit. Facebook has a clear goal they are headed towards and while they are not abandoning the PC space its focus has been reduced considerably. It seems after promising not to fuck things up Facebook exec are now poised to do exactly that. I mean why else would they be bleeding so much talent from so many divisions.

In what way is that clear? If some anonymous source says you something, you believe him more than their roadmap, official announcements and what-ever Nate (head of Rift) and the guys say? Everything just has to be a conspiracy theory.

And what bleeding? Oculus is growing like no other. What is your source?

Just look at any company or startups facebook has acquired and look how many of them have actually stayed at FB.
