AMD Aiming for 30% Market Share
AMD has reiterated that its main aim at the moment is to achieve a 30% market share in order to break Intel's monopoly. Speaking at the Morgan Stanley Technology Conference in San Francisco today, Hector Ruiz (chief executive of AMD) said "The environment is very competitive, very competitive. We need to break the monopoly, and for that we've got to get above 30% [market share]." Ruiz also announced that AMD was looking likely to fall below its first-quarter sales guidance of between $1.6 billion and $1.7 billion. By the end of 2006, Intel accounted for 74.4% of the overall processor market, with AMD in control of 25.3%, whilst Intel made up 77.7% of server chip sales. AMD has a strong challenge on its hands in the form of Intel's Core 2 Duo processor, which is becoming more popular among consumers allowing Intel to gradually claw back some of its market share.

AMD needs to learn that they can't compete based on performance anymore, so they need to start competing in price. Charging $500 for an X2 6000+ that is beat by a $300 E6600 isn't competing in price.
They are making the same mistakes Intel was when they lost the performance crown, they are still pricing their products like they perform better. Which will cause them to lose market share, not gain it.
If it doesn't flop, we may see a new era of head-to-head fighting between AMD and Intel that can only lead in cheaper faster parts.
amd is already moving to 45nm and never planed a long stay at 65nm, they are also working on implementing new tech into the chips that they and ibm developed in conjunction.
and amd isnt going to go under, their cpu buisness is only part of what they sell, they have other markets they service, just as intel and most other large companys do.
and 30% is easy, they just get a couple more OEM's to ramp up shipments of amd based systems to dealers.
HP/COMPCRAP
emachiens
dell
acer(last i checked)
and other OEM's already use amd chips, these hold FAR more market share then home builds and stuff like we build.
i do agree the 6000+ is overpriced, but meh, thats what you get with new top end chips, from bouth companys.
i will hold out for k10 kuma and rana :)
when do you guys see that happening? especially with intel dropping prices and rolling out more low power cpus that are equal to amds.
i hope amd does bring something out that will compete.
