NVIDIA Repurposing Scrapped RTX 3080 Ti GA102-250 GPUs to GA102-300 for RTX 3090

The NVIDIA RTX 3080 Ti has experienced numerous delays with the card's launch most recently being pushed to mid-May. The unreleased RTX 3080 Ti has gone through various internal revisions with the card expected to use a GA102-250 GPU until plans were scrapped in late January. The RTX 3080 Ti is now expected to feature the GA102-225 GPU instead when it finally releases. NVIDIA having already produced the required processors is now repurposing the GA102-250 GPUs slated for the RTX 3080 Ti for use in RTX 3090 Founders Edition cards. This switch makes sense as the GA102-250 was rumored to feature the same number of cores as the RTX 3090 just with a smaller memory size. NVIDIA appears to have now enabled the full 384-bit memory bus and has laser engraved the chips to show their change to GA102-300's.

I seriously don't see the point of the 3080Ti anymore.

Why sell a cheaper card with almost the same performance as the 3090 when you can't keep 3090s in stock?

Stores can't keep up with demand. That's pretty much true for any 3xxx card.

What ruined the 3090 was the price. To go from a $700 for the 3080 to $1,500 for the 3090 was just too much. Assuming you can find one that isn't multiple times MSRP. Probably it's mostly miners buying 3090s.

Thing, the 3090s are still all flying off the shelves as soon as they hit. So there is no point in selling a products that is essentially a crippled 3090 for cheaper. That's the reason why there is such low stock of the 3080s, because they use the same dies as the 3090s, and if there is a perfectly good 3090 die, there is no point crippling it to a 3080 and selling it for less.. only those that are truly defective would be sold as a 3080.

From a business stand point, 3080TI, shouldn't hit the shelves until your 3090s have been sitting on a retail shelve for more than a few days.

There is a point, and that is Nvidia have something to compete with the RX 6900 XT at around the same price on paper. Now all the releases are almost as good as paper launch anyway.

I can't prove this but it's my opinion that the 3090 is selling well due to the mining craze. As long as the miners keep buying them there will be a shortage. The only place that I know of where you can buy one is on Ebay for around $3,000

Hmm. I've never seen a die that has one code striked trough by laser and another one added. Very DIY.

I kind of want one, touches like this gives it collector's value.

3080Ti is completely pointless, hence the paper launch.

That'll be a good point. A curio from tech land. Like one of the old Palitoy Star Wars figurines sold with the wrong accessory or whatnot.

Its selling well because there is no cards available for miners to get. Its probably the least attractive card to them because not just is the RTX 3090 pricey for that extra memory bandwidth advantage, the extra VRAM don't benefit mining tasks at all. Instead they have to worry about the longevity of the card because of the VRAM at the rear running at dangerously high temps.

This literally makes no sense.

Let me get it straight...

nVidia makes a 3090 GPU...
nVidia makes a "cut down in some way" 3090 GPU for the 3080Ti...
nVidia use that "new" 3080 GPU in a 3090 card, despite having the original 3090 GPU...

What am I missing here?

Never seen a chip marking crossed out and re-etched like that, that's kinda hilarious and would be an awesome piece to remind us of the current GPU stockapocalypse

Maybe the 3090 fly off the shelves where you live but not in Norway. These have been available for quite a while now. No surprise there though. Cards that sell for $3K and up at the moment wont fly off the shelves as quickly as you may think or ever.

We have no idea what the demand is, minus miners of course.

Imagine buying the top end of a stack and STILL getting a cut down piece of silicon at 1500... MSRP, mind.

Tis a sad state of affairs, this whole Ampere thing - even without scalping, 'demand problems' and Huang's new house full of leather jackets.

He's not getting a single cent from me for the foreseeable future.

Not sure about this theory ! Maybe in your region but in EU 3090s are the only SKUs available to purchase , granted at inflated prices ( what isn't nowadays ) but still actually available !

They stay a bit longer on the shelves, but they still sellout very fast at very inflated price. So there is no point making chips that could sell for less (3080) if they can be sold for way more

3090 is $3,500 here in Australia, the prices are a joke.
3080 is $2,500
3070 is $1,500
3060 is $900 - 999
Apparently in stock.

We won't see 3080TI until mining craze collapses if at all. Why would you sell the same die for 999 bucks when you can sell it for 1.499 MSRP without any problems? It makes zero sense. AIBs can hike price of 3090 higher than that of 3080TI. I saw a German retailer offering 13 pieces of 3090 for €2679 (3150 bucks) and they were sold out within 2 days.

Imagine? Bro we have been living it on Nvidias side for some time already. The last "Full Fat" die released to regular consumers was Titan RTX that had the same core config as Quadro RTX 8000. After that full die has been reserved for Quadro line with A6000. So in terms of gaming there is no way to get full die on Nvidia's side at the moment no matter how much you pay. Perhaps that will change if Nvidia decides to release Titan Ampere but considering the shortages that may very well never happen because by that time a new series will be coming.

Simple. They decided not to release 3080Ti with this configuration but not to waste dies they repurposed 250 version to 300.

I doubt that.

GPU stock has nothing to do with miners or scalpers, its purely a function of demand grossly outweighing supply.
