Sabrent Rides the Chia Cryptocurrency Wave, Announces "Plotripper" SSDs with up to 54,000 TBW Endurance

Sabrent, which has become one of the go-tos in the world of Chia plotting and farming due to the price/performance/endurance ratio of its Rocket NVMe SSDs, has announced a new series of products specifically developed and marketed towards the Chia plotting crowds. Their new Plotripper SSDs (which drink from a quite obvious reference to AMD's Threadripper) have been designed to endure the harsh writing cycles for Chia plotting. Plotting is the process wherein you calculate the cryptographically-generated plots, and which can incur SSDs on a 1.6 TB write workload per 101 GB plot. The finished plot is then usually offloaded to a slow, capacious storage device (such as an external HDD) where it lays, awaiting for network challenges ad-infinitum. At time of writing, the total storage committed to Chia farming is estimated at 14 Exabytes.

The new Plotripper products are available in a mainstream and a "pro" variant. The mainstream Sabrent Plotripper offers a 10,000 TBW for its 2 TB capacity, which is already one of the highest available in consumer drives (until now). The Pro versions, however, promise 27,000 TBW of endurance for its 1 Tb capacity, and a staggering 54,000 TBW endurance rating for the 2 TB one. No word on pricing as of now, but these are sure to become some of the most sought-after SSDs for anyone planning to enter the Chia "farming" scene - and will definitely be priced accordingly.

lexluthermiesterSo the question remains: What are the prices?
Good question. Ostensibly we know this is basically an E18 combined with 4/8TB of QLC, so bears some resemblance in cost to the Rocket Q for example. Of course, we don't know how much DRAM it will have, and further you will pay more for the warranty (TBW). Not 100% sure on the flash (96L or 144L) and also controller prices are up this year, and of course the E18 is a bit more involved than the E12/E16. I'm talking about the Pro of course, the Non-Pro would be the Rocket 4 Plus with FortisMax TLC or something similar which we can price somewhat from the T-Create Expert PCIe. I have some idea of what the Plotripper Pro will run as I know some reviewers on the inside, however nothing to definitively report, but it's definitely more than the baseline I mention here (i.e. $649/$1399 for 4/8TB Rocket Q). I mentioned the FuzeDrive before where we also have priced ($349.99 MSRP for 2TB of QLC, so $700/$1400 gleaned from that as well).

Also re: pricing, keep in mind Z-NAND SLC came out at $2.16/GB (960GB for $2075.85) vs. the 4TB (1TB in SLC mode) Rocket Q at $649.99 right now, or less than 1/3rd the cost per SLC GB. Sabrent has some wiggle room to bounce that up.

R-T-BI don't get why people get so worked up around crypto. If you're concerned about the electric usage, Chia doesn't have it. If your concerned about ewaste, that's legit I guess, but they were going to buy something else anyways and the company is just pivoting.

Cryptocurrency and blockchain in general has the potential to give the world something great. I have always believed that. It is very much in it's infancy though, nearly everyone acknowledges this. The energy usage will fall with time, and the benefits will be fully realized with time. If people don't take weird stances like this, prematurely killing it anyways.

I mean it's totally your call. I just don't personally get it.
We are going off topic but no, I won’t support cryptocurrency in any way.
ewaste and wasting a tons of energy are two major concerns.
but you can just take a tour on the dark web to take a look of what you can do with non traceable crypto currency to understand why we don’t need it.
lynx29I disagree.

You are right and there was already the history of WannaCry making a good use of BitCoin, but I wouldn't ban the use of knife just because someone used it to kill;
Crypto might have shown mostly its dark side so far, but I am still curious to see what change it might bring to the global finance systems now that more people are aware of it and even recognize its value.

Crypto is very traceable. Issue is it's anonymous. Apply KYC at the exchange and it isn't anymore. Problem solved.

People really need to educate themselves before they hate.

You need a knife, for legit use. So you have to take the risk that someone could misuse it.
But we don’t need crypto currency...
And as I said before, energy consumption and e-waste are not a small issue too...

Nobody actually needs a knife. It's a luxury item that makes a task easier.
Same could be said for cryptocurrency.

R-T-BCrypto is very traceable.
lol... seriously

that’s why they are the preferred choice to buy drugs, weapons and access to illegal pornography on the dark web. Because they are so traceable
Every time you argue with a miner, he is in complete denial mode.

Next time you eat meat, try with without a knife.

While I understand as of now the general public (guess that's what "we" refers to) don't strictly need crypto in their daily life,
demand can be (artificially) created and who knows what crypto maybe good for in a positive way in the future.

I am also against the huge power consumption of PoW cryptos in general, but if creating ewaste is a reason enough to kill off crypto, there are a whole bunch of things (including the computer I am using now) should probably not be allowed.

It would be messy, sure. But something isn't classified as necessary unless you cannot do a task without that thing. And you can eat meat without a knife. That's why we have teeth, after all.

Are you serious ?
Do you know that mankind is using knives since Bronze Age, more than 4000 years ago ? Not to speak about edged tools made more than 2 million years ago...

I know you are a miner in denial, but now you are being ridiculous.
And no, human teeth aren't made to eat meat.

Do some homework on what you are attacking. It's anonymous, not untraceable. The entire blockchain is public record for anyone to view anytime. This is a core feature of the tech. If you make exchanges practice KYC the problem is solved.

The issue is, as it always has been, many countries and banks don't do that.
Max(IT)he is in complete denial mode.
You know, I was a news writer here once for crypto and it wasn't all rose tinted sunglasses. People forget quick.

I think you just need to understand what you criticize.

And yet, mankind existed prior to the invention of tools as well. How did they survive? They didn't have knives, yet they lived. Yes, their lives were objectively worse, but they survived nonetheless. Thus proving tools not a necessity, but rather a (very basic) luxury. Luxury doesn't mean jewelry or things that you have to be rich to use; I mean luxury in the sense of something that isn't stricly necessary for survival; practically anything non-food, non-water, non-shelter, etc.

And yes, human teeth (and our intenstinal system) are made for an omnivoric diet; that includes meat. We can, and do, live off meat. Cooked obviously makes the process a whole lot easier but we do eat raw meat from time to time. Sushi, beef jerky, smoked beef, cured meats, etc.

I am not in denial about being a miner, by the way. I have and do mine with my GPU. I know people on this forum usually don't like that because they associate it with e-waste and wasting of electricity, but that's just not the case with me. It's my gaming GPU that otherwise would go unused at night, and the electricity in my country is >99% hydro.
We are getting way off-topic anyhow so this is my last response on this topic.
