Sony Misses PlayStation 5 Sales Targets Due to Component Shortages

Sony revealed during a recent earnings call that they had shipped 19.3 million PlayStation 5 consoles worldwide since release which is 3.3 million units less then they had expected. This shortfall can be attributed to the difficulties Sony faced in acquiring all the necessary components however the company expects shipments to increase next financial year with a target of 18 million units. Sony also noted that game sales for the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 reached 14.5 million in the last quarter compared to 7.9 million the previous year. The companies PlayStation Plus service saw a loss of 200,000 subscribers down to 47.4 million in March 2022 from 47.6 million in March 2021 while active monthly users also dropped from 109 million to 106 million.

Interesting:

So they quietly increased the prices for retailers or what? No wonder I had to pay €640 for a shitty bundle.

That, or the components got cheaper (even if they are in short supply). Usually, a console that starts its life being sold at a loss eventually turns that around due to the cost to manufacture it getting cheaper over time.

They sold 3.3 million units less then target and they have a pricepoint below manufacturing cost, so they have reduced loss by ([manufacturing cost] - [unit selling price]) * 3.3M.

We all expect, but if you get it is another thing.

In the end they be alright, just maybe people are not up for paying $100 a year and see what MS have to offer as a better deal ?.

Any idea as to what the components could be e.g. Malaysian resisters or some such?

In Greece too. They sporadically show up as bundles only. But at least supply is a bit better now, meaning that if someone wants one, they can eventually buy a bundle and bundles last for some hours when they show up.
Still, 650-750€ is too much for a consone with some bundled games/accessories that most people don't want...

I got tagged with a newegg shuffle email the other day. It had some PS5 bundles on it. All the bundles included the digital PS5 ($399) + 1 extra controller (roughly $50) and they all had a total of around $448.

I didn't realize newegg was still doing any shuffles, I figured inventory kind of came around for the PS5 and possibly even the Xbox, but since I'm not actively looking for these consoles I guess I was mistaken. I didn't realize that that inventory issues were still a thing for consoles.

Still waiting for a slim nicer looking PS5. I allready own a PS3 orginial with ps2 and ps1 support. Also a PS4 Pro but I really do not want 3 consoles all at once. The Power the the PS5 it should be able to play ps1 ps2 ps3 and ps4 games and in the orginial specs it was suppose too. Maybe the PS6 or 7 will finally have the full support of all the old games and new. One console on the stand is better than 5 consoles.

I wouldn't bet on it, Sony seems to be going the Nintendo way with a subscription service and game streaming for older games from old platforms. If they aren't putting in the minimum-ish effort to emulate the old consoles on the current hardware I doubt they'll ever pick it up again in the future (ps1 is easy, ps2 less easy, ps3 is harder but they do have internal knowledge of the entire architecture, if the community projects can do it, they also can)

But at least the PS5 runs everything from the PS4 so when you feel like ditching the PS4 Pro you can still keep only 2 consoles (PS3 and PS5/6/....). The PS4 can run ps1 and ps2 emulators if you're into the homebrew stuff but I doubt it will ever be able to handle the PS3

Well technically the PS5 is the same as a PC running lunix based coding. My lunix box can play Ps1 and ps2 and ps3 games pretty good so there really is no reason why the PS5 could not. I just think Sony does not care anymore.
Microsoft on the other hand did with there xbox series x console. They made it fully backwards to Xbox 1 Xbox 360 and all others. That was a smart move by Microsoft. Sony needs to learn that lesson again.

If Sony was thinking they would put exclusives on their platform for 3 months and release them to PC. They could take advantage of the current climate and sell A Gaming PC clone for under $1000. My feeling is that is what is happening to the Xbox ecosystem. Gamepass is fully supported in Steam

Last Xbox my brother had was the 360. He brought up all his games for my kids to try out on the Xbox X we have. Out of the 3 dozen+ games, I tried 10 of them and out of those 10 only 5 worked.

Not all games are backwards compatible. I'm wondering if it comes down to licensing fees because one of the games was The Simpsons Game and it doesn't work from the disc on the Xbox we have.

PS5 will do ok but Sony really missed out on what could have been a huge sales boom over the pandemic if they had inventory. Now with pandemic restrictions ending, many people are spending more time outdoors and travelling than at home. If every Target, Best Buy, Gamestop and WalMart B&M store had them in stock they'd see a bump, but I really don't think they'd get the big sales surge they would have had a year ago. Unfortunately for Sony I don't think it necessarily was their fault, if suppliers can't supply them things grind to a halt. But it was certainly a missed very unique business opportunity to sell a whole bunch of consoles while many people were stuck at home. Demand can be a fickle thing. Also, with gpu prices dropping due to crypto values falling, the advantage for casual gamers that a $500 console had over a $$$ gpu and PC gaming has also diminished.
