Shuttle Launches Xeon-Compatible XPC Barebone SW580R8 Mini-PC
To satisfy more than just the requirements of typical desktop applications, with the XPC Barebone SW580R8 the Taiwanese Mini-PC pioneer Shuttle is for the first time marketing a model with a cube format which impresses with features that were previously only found with traditional server and workstation products. Based on the Intel W580 chipset, as well as Intel Core processors of the 10th and 11th generation, the SW580R8 also supports Intel Xeon W series processors whose strengths lie in VFX, 3D rendering, complex 3D CAD and AI development & edge management.
For the first time in a Mini-PC from Shuttle, you can choose error-correcting ECC RAM. Spread over four slots, a maximum of 128 gigabytes is possible. Another first is the total of four network ports, two with a bandwidth of 2.5 Gbit and two with 1 Gbit, which support separate networks, offer failover and load balancing. One of the ports is vPro-compatible and AMT-compatible and, in conjunction with a suitable processor, enables convenient remote management, even when the PC is switched off."This model combines functions and features that have never been seen in this form in our range before," explains Tom Seiffert, Head of Marketing & PR at Shuttle Computer Handels GmbH. "The high power density of the SW580R8 is particularly impressive."
The puristic R8 aluminium chassis can accommodate four 3.5" SATA hard drives. A separate cooling system, which produces a constant airflow, prevents any build-up of heat between the data carriers. Then there are two M.2-2280 slots on the mainboard which can be used for NVMe SSDs with PCIe-×4-4.0 and PCIe-×4-3.0 and thus add up to six drives.
For dual-slot graphics cards or expansion cards, the Mini-PC measuring 33.2 × 21.5 × 19.0 cm (DWH) features two PCI-Express slots with ×16-4.0 and ×4-3.0. Wireless modules (WLAN, etc.) or interface cards have also been considered; they can be plugged into an M.2-2230 slot.
The ports on the front and back comprise 1× HDMI 2.0b, 2× DisplayPort 1.4, 4× USB 3.2 (10 Gbit), 1× USB 3.2 Type C (5 Gbit), 3× USB 3.2 (5 Gbit), 4× USB 2.0, audio and the clever remote power-on connection.
The accessories available are the WLAN ax/Bluetooth kit (WLN-M1) or WLAN ac/Bluetooth kit (WLN-M) with matching antennas, the COM port adapter (H-RS232), an installation frame for two 2.5" drives in a 3.5" bay (PHD3), the connecting cable for the remote power-on connection (CXP01) and an 850 watt power supply upgrade kit (PC850).
Pricing
Shuttle's recommended retail price for the XPC Barebone SW580R8 is EUR 483.00 (ex VAT).

"two with a bandwidth of 2.5 Gbit and two with 1 Gbit," - I see 2 x 10GBe:) Wrong! That's for the USB ports #facepalmCould be nice, but buying a new system in 2022 that's still on 14nm... no thanks :(
I have a few... concerns, though. Those NVMe drives are going to absolutely roast under load. Very little airflow via side panel vents. Almost none if you put a GPU in there.
Their ICE cooling system is great, and all... but I'm hesitant to give it a CPU with 125W TDP, especially if boost clocks are enabled.
At some point, Shuttle may need to consider relocating the PSU and offering a 120MM ICE.
IMHO, Shuttle had its glory days, and they were good days, but in the world of ITX, the offer nothing but a half built system and that once great name... :(
