Elon Musk Announces that Twitter Will Change Name to X

After having paid US$44 billion for Twitter, it appears Elon Musk isn't happy with Twitter being Twitter and is now getting ready to change the name of the social media platform to X. For those that aren't familiar with Elon Musk's company history, X was his online bank that preceded PayPal, or rather X.com, a domain name that is still owned by Elon Musk and currently redirects to Twitter. It appears that Elon Musk and Twitter CEO Linda Yaccarino have big plans for X, at least according to several posts by the Twitter CEO.

Yaccaranio in a post on Twitter states that "X is the future state of unlimited interactivity - centered in audio, video, messaging, payments/banking - creating a global marketplace for ideas, goods, services, and opportunities. Powered by AI, X will connect us all in ways we're just beginning to imagine." Make of this what you want, but it appears that Twitter is about to go through some major changes, some that had already been mentioned by Musk as early as last year. Time will tell if this will be a direction that Twitter's users want things to go, or if the platform will end up dying a death of a thousand cuts.

dragontamer5788Oh no. Threads only has 30-million users after 2 weeks! They're obviously going to collapse.

I mean, I'm over here happily sitting in Lemmy land with somewhere between 100k and 1MM users. Its a good enough community in practice. We will see if Lemmy works out, but the numbers here are pretty large, all else considered.

I personally don't think that Twitter will go to zero users. My main argument is that Twitter is now losing nearly $3 Billion/year (estimated, see my previous posts). Facebook/Meta is making $20+ Billions/year in contrast, so I don't see any reason why they'd give up this year, or next. With such a deficit in $$$money, Twitter's ability as a company to continue existing is... well... at crisis levels. Even if Elon Musk is a $hundred-billionaire, its still embarassing for him to hold onto a company losing $3ish Billion/year, and there's been no move this year to suggest that Elon Musk has the mental capacity to fix this problem.
Musk took one for the team when he purchased Twitter. It's a lot more enjoyable now than it was in the past imo.

Say what you mean please! What has brought you joy from “X” now that Musk is in charge? Which “team” did he take one for? Why was it worth $44 B?

It's worse than that, Elon Musk is super rich but cash poor - most of his money is in Tesla stock and equity in is various companies. He already had to sell a lot of Tesla stocks to be able to buy Twitter - which causes is fortune to shrink as Tesla loses value from a massive shareholder dumping stock, which makes the rest of his position less valuable - he can't simply dump another couple billion in Tesla stock to shore up twitter without risking Tesla's future. And then there's the banks that loaned him part of the money to buy twitter, if the money pit continues at some point they'll want to exercise whatever options were in the loan contracts to recoup their money.

If twitter doesn't figure out a way to make money soon it might really get to the point where they are just forced to close up shop.

NaterHe's only worth $200,000,000,000. What a moron he must be.
Money does not equal brains man (and he's lost a ton of it recently).
Prima.VeraHe is not the richest man alive for doing silly things
Actually, he sort of is, he's a glorified salesman of silly ideas. The only problem with your statement is he isn't the richest man alive anymore.

Ignoring the political topics, its common knowledge that mentioning Substack Notes or Threads is a shadowban. That means if you're an Instagram influencer, you ain't welcome on Twitter anymore. If you're a Substack blogger, you ain't welcome anymore. Elon Musk is so idiotic that he is actively destroying the goodwill between Twitter and its content-providers. That's two major websites who have been wrecked and are basically forcing an ultimatum. TikTok is likely next now that TikTok is entering as a competitor.

Between the choice of Instagram+Threads and Twitter, do you think the typical Instagram-influencer would ever choose Twitter?

Between the choice of Substack+Notes and Twitter, do you think the typical blogger would ever choose Twitter?

Etc. etc. You can't just close your website off like this and be hostile. As Elon likes to put it: If you mess with people's freeze peaches, they will leave. There's plenty of other groups (Substack, Tik Tok, and Threads... as well as Mastodon and Lemmy) that have superior free speech / moderation policies.

Surely you see the irony of banning competitors and people you don’t like while proclaiming to be a free speech absolutist, right?

No? No surprise there :p

Why_MeThat was personal. Not saying it's right but Musk obviously doesn't like Greenspan after Greenspan sued him multiple times.
American: "We have free speech in our country. I can go to my town square and loudly proclaim that Ronald Regan is an idiot, and no one would arrest me".

Soviet: "We too have free speech in our country. I can go to my town square and loudly proclaim that Ronald Regan is an idiot, and no one would arrest me".

You are so blind dude if you can't answer that one on your own. Also, the guy who tracked his jet using public data, and Xvideos for uh... the name X. But let's not think about this one too much.

I'm pretty sure he's full blinders mode. Was wondering how long it'd take him to wind up in this thread.

Twitter was used to be recognized by the letter t alone, and because there are three T's in Twitter and they changed it to X now, I suggest they change it to XXX instead.

The only names more vague and meaningless would be "_" or " ". Seriously, single character domain names should be outlawed.

Don’t mention the workers while forgetting all of the labor disputes and racist practices at Musk’s companies. Incidentally, the majority of people fired for social media are cops posting racist things, but we all know with @Why_Me it’s just thinly veiled propaganda disguised as “free speech”

Anyway a great way for Musk to drive the value of Twitter further and further down. “In Q2 we spend $540m on lost lawsuits defending pubic officials against accusations of racism”

Fan-tas-tic. That page got X'ed :D
trsttteI doubt it, there's too much red tape in the space industry and this kind of project involves too many people for something like that
Did you know Russia / USSR is pretty big in space, and rockets too?

Now think of the percentage of yes-men in there ;) You give human individuals too much credit. We can do a lot of things right and still get everything critical wrong, while surviving on what was right for literal ages. Climate is a perfect example. How many yes-men... ?? :) And did anyone even have to say yes during all that time? Shit just happened and no amount of no-men has managed to turn it around. Another example: nuclear/cuba crisis... only a single no-man in the right place at the right time averted us all from pressing the red button back then. Everyone else was nodding in agreement...

Use your words captain free speech

The whole thing is hilarious. Mark Zuckerberg, know martial arts enthusiast and total dork is eating 4,000 calories a day to bulk up while keeping up with his routine, vs Musk, self-proclaimed alpha who hates exercise but is starting to lift weights at work and has no fighting background and hasn’t confirmed the august 28th date because he might need surgery on his back and neck (as in he’ll be ready in a year or two)

idk how much of a loser you have to be to put stock in a couple of nerds fighting each other but some people just can’t admit they’re virulent racists so I guess this’ll be resolved by watching one idiot beat up another. Anyone who has a horse in this race is an idiot.

I’m just glad I didn’t have to see Musk’s frightening dad bod tho like I had to when I turned to page six so thanks for sparing us with the photoshop

I still burst out laughing when I see this badass, every time. Revenge of the Nerds comes to mind
And Elon, he should start an acting career, he's on that very specific Arnold Schwarzenegger level, no matter the part he gets, he'll have that same face that just says it all and covers every emotion. I guess that's what keta and coke do to Real Men. One-liners galore, too...

And like you say... imagine rooting for either one. :rockout: how low can you go, I guess it definitely has that specific social media quality to it: absolute nonsense.

Except it's not billionaires in a ring.

It's Elon Musk talking shit again and he will predictably find a way to escape this while Elon Musk's fanboys collectively get amnesia about this event.

The fight won't happen. Period. The only entertainment value here is maybe... Just maybe, watching fanboys get distracted and seeing how many stupid people Elon can mislead again.

The point of the 'fight' is to distract and troll. Much like going off topic about how much X sucks and how bad xvideos is as a name and that no one wants to send Xes to each other.
