Whenever the Rog thingy cometh, the ROG tax taketh away (all your money).....

If it's new, trendy or (supposedly) more better, the RoG'er will be all over it from day 1, to maximize their profits, while all the "I gotta have the latest & greatest" folks gobble it up....

The question is how much. I know the ROG router is probably gonna be in the four digits, but the RT-BE96U was also $700. There's no point in Wi-Fi 7 if prices stay so high. I must say, ASUS and pretty much the entire industry are making it as hard as possible for me to get of my RT-AC68U... just too comfy. Wi-Fi 5 is perfectly adequate to meet most people's basic needs.

The other router from TP-Link I decided to try was an absolute disappointment - with a huge security risk in that always-on logger spyware it had.

Don't mistake this wonderful device for something as tedious as a router. It is a black-red symbol of vanity, at the same time projecting your "geekyness" - even if you, like many young people, don't know what a file is - and prodigality. You don't even need to connect it to a network to achieve its main goal. What a time to be alive.

This is the trend for new routers these days and I hate it. Might as well setup an enterprise network in your house as it will either be around the same price or slightly cheaper.

They're pretty good at hiding the underlying specs of the soc & wifi vendors, I hope OpenWrt will run on those at some point. I just bought a TUF AX4200 for $130 and reflashed it as a dumb AP not a bad price but it's Wi-Fi 6 only.

As Asus mainly use Broadcom hardware, you can forget about OpenWRT support on these. Some of their TUF routers use MTK and have OpenWRT support.

Finally.. More 2.5G switch capacity on Broadcom stuff. Surprised the BE86U also gets the current top end CPU and not the gimped 2ghz version.

If the price is right in the next couple years, I'll prob get grabbing one of these to use as a media bridge.

If you add 2 or 4 bays for SSD/HDD/M.2 it would already be a NAS...
