Sony Expected to Announce PlayStation 5 Pro Later Today

Sony is widely expected to announce its new premium PlayStation 5 Pro game console later today. The PlayStation Twitter handle posted that a PlayStation 5 technical presentation hosted by Mark Cerny (PlayStation systems lead architect) would stream later today, without specifying PlayStation 5 Pro. The announcement stream will be rather brisk, spanning only 9 minutes, but it seems enough for Cerny to provide a detailed rundown of what to expect from the PS5 Pro, since this is a premium variant of the existing PS5 generation, and not a "PlayStation 6." The PlayStation 5 Pro is being designed to offer 4K Ultra HD gameplay at native, or near-native resolution, with added eye-candy, thanks to its significantly updated graphics processor.

Guwapo77In 2024, people still think this way.
Then tell me, why would I want a PS5 (and buy every game twice) if I already have a decent gaming PC?

ChomiqLack of good exclusives is what makes PS5 useless for me right now. It's been months since I played anything on it.
Now this is a great point and a huge reason the lower than hoped system sells. With that said, I'm still buying one! I know, I'm a sucker for the PlayStation (since PS1).

I buy the exclusives bro. I'm not the guy who wants to was 2-20 years for the game to eventually get ported over.

Darmok N JaladNo need to be condescending. Sure, a console isn't for you, but there's no need to insult those that are perfectly happy playing on one. I've owned both over the years, and a console is really nice when you don't have a lot of time and space for a dedicated gaming machine.
Was intended as Tongue in cheek with a touch of reality ;)

The opposite is ofc also true. Consoles are closer to a PC experience in terms of horsepower, indie gaming etc. So I totally feel ya

natr0nonce you have a good pc, console doesnt mean anything anymore.
Console is for people who no longer want to deal with the hassle of PC gaming, having system or OS or driver updates break your game, but not your friends install, etc, etc. Lockups, freezing, unoptimized code....these are rare on console but 'the norm' on PC. This is largely going to depend on the amount of free-time and disposable income you have to work with, of course. When you realize you spend more time tweaking and optimizing your game than playing and enjoying it, eh, you start to realize a lot of gaming is FOMO based.

Sony was chasing 4K with the PS4 (30fps/1080p standard) to PS4 Pro upgrade, and to smooth out the few games that were pushing 1080p/30fps at not quite making it.....so it worked even though people bitched about it then, too it was easy to solve-for with a GPU upgrade. You weren't chasing many more features in your game engine, just a raw horsepower bump to enable hardware scaling to 4K (mostly).

£3-500 for a console just to play one, maybe two exclusive titles per generation... That sounds to me like an extremely huge waste of money, but if it makes you happy, then who am I to judge.

699.00 for PS5 Pro, Exactly the same price I paid for my PS3 in 2006 which I waited in line for overnight to get one of the first. And guess what still works today.

So you're willing to stand in line for this as well?

Well that was short, did Sony run out of budget or something o_O

well 700us, that is expensive…

edit…

but it stops scalpers, sets a pricing level for the ps6…
gives Microsoft a reason to make games fir the Series X, a console at 430us/600can , and perhaps closer to a ps5pro that a ps5…

and makes the PS5 digital a better deal.

if the performance of the ps5pro pans out, it will be fairly priced…

Mark Cerny (about the ps5) said people want 60fps, he thought they wanted “pretty pixels”… so “why not both”, BUT “its gonna cost you” (which we find out at the end of the pitch)

about the ps4pro, lots of tech mumbo-jumbo…(checkerboarding, double the shaders but same RAM …it was a “pretty-pixel” upgrade (IMO)

btw, i have the ps4pro, and ps5. and the PS5 is incomparable to the ps4pro. (PS5… “The way a console should be”

AusWolfYou need the same amount of time to play on any machine. But a PC is at least backwards compatible with older games. Buying a new console every 3-5 years only to not be able to play my old games sounds incredible wasteful to me both financially and in space. But each to their own, I guess.
Why would you not be able to play your old games? You don’t have to discard the previous generation console when you get the new one. I have a 360 in storage and a Wii still hooked up for my kids. I suppose they could break, and someday I won’t be able to get a replacement, but gosh, I have DOS games on 2.5 floppies that I can’t play on anything I own anymore. Eventually the old stuff takes more work than it’s worth to play again. Again, it’s not a bashing of anyone’s choices. It’s nice to have those choices, and you are doing what’s best for you. I can’t fault that.

But you don't have to keep multiple generations of PCs and hook them all up to your monitor to run old games. You can sell any old gear and keep just one PC. To me, this seems way more cost and space efficient than having multiple generations of consoles. But like you said, each to their own.

Adjusting settings is a few minutes at most unless you have to restart the game to make changes. We've had presets for a long time now.

True, I just never paid much attention to them beyond the "set it to Ultra and see how bad it is" and dial-down from there. Then dial down as you encounter later levels in the game that are less optimized.....I spent more time doing that than investing in the worlds the dev's created.

Looks like some games are getting major updates to take advantage of the upgraded GPU.

I wish Sony would release the GT series for PC. GT7 is the only game I want that would justify the PS5 Pro to me. That's a hard sell.
