Microsoft Zune Drops to $199 on Wednesday

In response to Apple's new iPods waiting to be unleashed tomorrow, Microsoft announced a price drop for its Zune music player. The price of the Zune will drop from $249 to $199. The player, which was introduced in November, features a 30GB HDD, 3" display, limited WiFi connectivity and an FM tuner. The Zune was originally launched in White, Brown and Black, but eventually expanded to include Baby Pink and Watermelon Red. Microsoft also released two special Halo and Pink edition Zunes.

It's just like the iPod, except that it has a bigger screen, better sound quality, and is cheaper. Guess what you lose - the name. (Something that I'm always happy to give up)

i've played around with one, the controls are very simple and the music loads very fast... compared to my zen microphoto which took about 10 seconds to load a song when i went from artist to artist...

my only problem is i dont really like the colors of the zune all that much

Zune is really cool. I had a Zune but I installed an 80 GB hard drive and sold it last week for $370. I'm waiting for the next zune release. - - In the meantime, I'm installing a 60GB HDD in my bro's zune and selling it. Gotta save up for Zune2!

Wow, I didnt really bank on it being better than the Ipod. One of my friends has one and I must say Im very impressed with the Ipod. If this is cheaper, faster and better, I might look into buying a Zune, though I wish they would offer a nice blue color.

Also, I didnt know you could upgrade the HDDs in them. Are they using 2.5" SATA drives or something?

It's a ZIF drive, same as the ipod. MK6008GAH , go to ipodmods to see how to swap drives.

The sound quality is the same when comparing file:file. Also, it's a little bulckier. I've heard it can do power point slides when plugged up to a projector, haven't actually tried that.

It prob dont need a case either.. but the thing never really picked up in my area... I have yet to see one in a store lol. Ipod video = needs a aftermarket case, its still nice though.

It's made with a more expensive material, therefore, it is logical to have some sort of plastic or rubber material to protect it.

I've seen Zunes in stores, but I've never actually seen someone with a Zune.

The sound quality isn't the same. Some people prefer the iPod's quality and some people prefer the Zune's quality.
But most people prefer the Zune, and it makes sense. Why would Apple step up the iPod's sound quality when they are the only ones in the market.
Now with the Zune, you have a better product for less money. It's what I hope will happen to 10k RPM SATA HDD market.
