ZOTAC Unveils First Graphics Card with DisplayPort

ZOTAC International (MCO) Ltd., a PC Partner Group company, today announced it is committed to releasing DisplayPort equipped graphics cards. DisplayPort technology is undergoing development with NVIDIA-based graphics cards within ZOTAC.

"ZOTAC is ready to manufacture and ship DisplayPort equipped products, such as those based on NVIDIA's GeForce 8800GT," said Carsten Berger, marketing director, ZOTAC International (MCO) Ltd. "We will release the DisplayPort equipped products into the channel next year when DisplayPort monitors are released and consumers are ready to embrace the new standard."

ZOTAC DisplayPort equipped products will maintain compatibility with existing DVI and VGA standards for users with existing DVI or VGA capable displays. Although ZOTAC graphics cards will feature native DisplayPort interfaces, bundled DisplayPort-to-DVI or DisplayPort-to-HDMI adapters will be included to maintain dual DVI or HDMI outputs.

DisplayPort technology is the next-generation display interface technology set to replace DVI, VGA and LVDS standards to unify the three PC analog and digital video standards into a single digital standard.

General details
  • ZOTAC commits to DisplayPort technology
  • DisplayPort equipped products ready to go
  • Will ship DisplayPort NVIDIA-based graphics cards when customers demand
  • DisplayPort equipped graphics cards will maintain DVI and HDMI compatibility with adapters

well at least now I know about ZOTAC. and obviously we can expect all other board makers (BFG, e-vga,) to bring out displayport equipped cards when there is demand as well.

But is it a viable alternative to DVI when you're not doing resolutions above 1900x1200?

It's also free : "Open and extensible standard to help with broad adoption."

Yes, because like HDMI, it can carry audio. It can also have daisy chaining as a feature.
