ASUS and DFI Add Penryn Support to 680i Boards

Motherboard manufacturers ASUS and DFI are both working on BIOSes which will allow users to install quad-core Intel Penryn processors on motherboards equipped with an nForce 680i chipset - a feature which was labelled as being a major advantage of the new nForce 780i chipset. The enabling factor for these two companies is that they both use their own motherboard layouts, rather than NVIDIA's reference designs. Therefore, they have managed to create beta BIOSes capable of working with quad-core Penryn chips on 680i systems - the ASUS Striker Exteme and the DFI LanParty UT NF680i SLI-T2R. These BIOSes are not yet available to the public, but assuming there are no legal issues that would prevent them from doing so, it shouldn't be long before ASUS and DFI release them.

I hope ASUS adds support to their lower end boards too.

Aah...heart goes out to all those who would've sold their 680i DFI/ASUS boards just to use the Yorkfield on a new board.

This is great news. Tough luck for those using "Designed by NVIDIA" boards from EVGA, BFG and XFX

This is great! My only complaint is that I would like to have PCIE 2.0 since I will be getting cards that would utilize it, but hey I'd much rather have a DFI board.

It's going to depend on the board maker. Each board maker will have to work on a BIOS update to get it to work with Yorkfield/Wolfdale. I'm sure if one or 2 do the BIOS update, they will all fall in line, so as not to piss off their future customer base.

If (the big IF) I do end up buying a NForce 780i, I wouldn't choose a "Designed by NVIDIA" board (reference design). Who knows, Nehalem isn't too far and then if I get a nut-kick that would be a costly one.

If they can make this work with the P5N32-E that would be awesome!! The new Asus 780i board is sooooo nice though...

I find this funny since the dfi board barley supports kent's. Sure if you plan to run stock the board is alright but with most boards the mosfets heat up so much under load it either throttles the cpu down or shuts off.
